  • I really don't know

Actually I cleared up my herb bed and topped up the mulch. I then spent what I thought was 20 minutes building two frames for my brassica beds but took two hours

    • Finished off newspaper mulching the half plot. All eight beds are now covered in newspaper. Worked out where the next batch of clearance sale raised beds are going to go.

      • *Dug up our Kestrel second earlies - filled three large hessian sacks.
*Weeded between the cabbages and Kale.
        * Dug over the bed where I lifted the onions yesterday.
        * Pulled the outer leaves off the Celeriac to allow the sunshine to get to the roots.
        * Pulled up the climbing beans - they really didn't start and the winds this week have finished them off.

Other half spent the day concreting in fence posts. Our Polytunnel arrived from First Tunnels this week and we are now preparing the site. The first job is to put a 6' slatted fence around the site which will be boarded and have wind break netting on. Sounds a bit drastic but we had 138 mph gusts here last winter.

        • - spent nearly all day pulling the foliage off my beans, so they dry quicker
          - fed the leeks, courgette, pumpkins & butternuts
          - planted a tray of Chinese veg
          - picked another kilo of raspberries (getting bored now, and the freezer's full)
          - chopped up the windfall sunflowers, left on soil as a mulch
          - brought the seeds home because the shed is now going to get damp
          - cut 3 Uchiki Kuri that were ripe & ready to eat
          - scored a load of half price gravel trays at Wilkinson
          - topped the dog-poo composter up with another layer of grass clippings
          - videoed dozens of Silver Y moths on my lavender: they just appeared out of nowhere
          - caught & mashed another couple of cabbage whites in my fishing net
          - swore at the sweetcorn which STILL isn't ready

            • Finally finished digging over the spud bed ready for green manure. Bad back means it has taken a month to do a 6X1.5m bed. Sowed winter tares - leeks in here next year.
Went to the garden centre and spent the £70 we were given for plants.
Cleared more leaves from the tomatoes. Blight has taken hold.

                • - had a tidy up at school:
                  - took down the peas, saved the seeds and composted the stalks
                  - defoliated the beans, to ripen the pods quicker
                  - collected lots of wildflower seeds to parcel up and distribute to staff & parents
                  - continued pulling horsetail & couch out (it's much more manageable if you keep on top of it)
                  - other weeds (non seeding ones) are just chopped with secateurs and left on soil as a mulch
                  - deadheaded the coreopsis and dahlias, which just keep going, on and on and on. Brilliant
                  - chopped up the buddleja that was planted 3" from the chain link fence, and keeps escaping
                  - chopped comfrey leaves up and left on the raised beds
                  - one bed is badly infested with couch grass, so it's now covered with newspaper until spring
                  - Lastly, I placed ripe pumpkins and marrows in the empty salad bed, which gave the Head a surprise: she said she's never seen such quick-growing crops in her life

                    • Dragged the four raised beds down the plot. Only after Pops had taken one look at them (one of them had broken apart at a corner) and strengthened all of them with his cordless drill. I dragged two of them, pops then dragged the other two. He doesn't come down there very often. Took a long look at the plot, and then left me to it.

Later, I took down the four cardboard boxes that the beds had come in. Used them to line the four beds.

Dragged down a builders bag, and then tried to sink some bulbs but the brain refused to play.

                      • Sowed winter spinach and white radish.
Cleared more blighted leaves from the tomatoes.
Dug out the edge of one of the brassica beds in order to make the edges easier to cut, to redistribute the soil from the bottom of the slope back to the top, to undermine the mole who has runs along the edges of the beds (but always avoids the traps I put there) and use the mole hills to earth up the brassicas.

                        • Today I:

planted my late purple sprouting (one last attempt against the bloomin' slugs)
                          Planted my choy sum seedlings
                          Planted up my endive seedlings
All in containers with slug pellets surrounding the containers and then again around the actual plants.

I also dug out my courgette plants, mange tout and peas - a disappointing year this year.
