  • This week:
Finished clearing the tomato plants. Spread compost over the area for the winter - drying beans in here next year.
Weeded around the artichokes and gave them a compost mulch. Ditto strawberries.
Planted out mustard greens, pak choi and turnips and a day later replanted them after the mole tunnelled underneath. Set mole trap.
    Sowed lettuces.
Planted out coriander and parsley and also a pot of parsley to bring in later.

          • Today...
            • Made some lazy garlic then worried that 6.30am may be a bit too early to be making so much noise with a food processor!
            • Took out some cukes at the lottie, dug over and put in some green manure (I figure I won't show the seeds the calendar or the packet saying it had to be in by September)
            • Harvested more courgettes and patty pans
            • Pottered at the plot
            • Realised I may be addicted to emoticons when I say this message: "You have included a total of 5 images and/or videos in your message. The maximum number that you may include is 4. Please correct the problem and then continue again".

                • Tied in new growth of tayberry, pruned a few blackcurrants. Made an apple tart and picked a tray of russets. Picked a load of seeds for saving from the flower border. Dug the first early parsnips, as we had a little frost a couple of weeks ago and I need some ground. Discovered 4 giant crown prince in the squash patch, which was a complete surprise as last time I looked I couldn't see any. Had a good look at the orchard: will have to give it some tlc soon, the old apple trees look pretty poorly. Pulled carrots from the poly, potted up some salvias to overwinter in the gh. Made a big chilli, had a few glasses of wine with oh and played farmville2 for an hour. A good day.

                  • Attacked my herb bed and my strawberry bed with a heavy duty strimmer. Finished up covered in spalttered slugs and snails.

Strung some more onions that had dried and finally got around to sticking a label in each of my tomatoes I have selected for seed. Black russian methinks,a Cedrico F2, a beeefsteak, a large plum and a couple of little sweetuns! That should do me for my seeds for next year!

                    • A sad day, as I have finally called time on my pumpkin patch. I left the butternut squashes in the hopes that the pups might develop some more (why oh why do the bloomin' things leave it so late before appearing?) and there is still life in the courgettes and patty pans, but the it seems that the winter storers have reached the end of their allotted span.

It all looks a bit sad and bare now.

                      • - pulled up more beans for indoor drying. That's nearly all of them in now
                        - chopped up the remains of the vines, left on beds as a mulch
                        - cut back the lavender, dried the bits for kindling
                        - covered weeds with a newspaper mulch
                        - cut another bucket full of foliage off the tomatoes, which just refuse to slow down
                        - took more pelargonium cuttings for the east facing windowsills
                        - put 3 gallons of raspberry wine into DJs
                        - did a bit more work on the Guinea Hilton (pics to follow)

                        • Cleared out most of the tomato plants from the culti-cave.
Squashed gazillions of hawk moth caterillars that had been having green tomatoes for lunch
Sowed some field beans and some mustard as green manure.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

                          • Harvested a bunch of courgettes which I then turned into courgette pickle. Cut the old leaves off the courgette plants to give the last remain veg a chance to grow before I finally chop them all up and get the raised beds sorted out for next year.
Picked the pods off the sweet peas to dry for next year.
Tidied up all the pots, emptied the ones that were completely compacted with roots and planted some mustard in the others as a green manure.
Cleared out all the tomato plants as even though they were still trying to fruit the blight had completely taken over.
Cleared out the rotten cat scratching post. Will have to make a new one for them as they love having one in the garden.
Finally picked and ate plenty of raspberries and the wild blackberries that have appeared again over the fence.

                              • Yesterday. It was a gorgeous day in Stoke-on-Trent, so dragged OH down the plot ... he didn't need dragging really and he cleared out my shed whilst I cleaned out beds. Picked almost the last of the runner beans to have for my supper last night. The beds for the overwintering onions and the garlic are now ready and my shed is nice enough to sit in! Just as well as it is a vile morning here - grey and drizzly.
