  • Well, haven't done much today, was hoping my seeds were gonna arrive but no luck yet. Had some commotion last night as someone went missing by the sea, so we had a Sea King hovering over the house going up and down the shore, but didnt find anything. This morning they sadly found a body, so the field was over run with the coastguard, police and others. So it was off to the polytunnel and shut myself in while they recovered the body.

Work wise, it was just weeding one side and started to make a path roughly in the middle as i was fed up of walking on the mud. Sadly the soil was filled with stones, so thats tomorrows job. sieve the soil, get the plastic down and stones on top. Then Sieve the rest of the soil and make sure its all lump free. Add some compost and manure to the mix too.

    • Just some more watering, Pulled a lot of turnips and one parsnip.

Quiet day really on the gardening front.

      • Got a bit bored so I sowed some free tomato seeds
Given it is 2:30, it didn't take up quite as much of the afternoon as I was hoping

        • Dry day = lottie time. Paddled round the lanes but my plot was ok . Cut down autumn raspberries, cut back encroaching brambles , dug up some pathetic celeriac , pulled a cabbage, had a natter .....
Home via the woopsies at Asda .......
Sowed some prizetaker leeks, some of my french shallot seeds, crimson broadies and in the hope of bigger and better roots ,some giant prague celeriac. Peered hopefully at seeds already sown ....
S*d the housework I have a lottie to dig

          • Finally got round to clearing the polytunnel of all the dead tomato, pepper and aubergine plants and clearing the staging. There is nothing more exciting than this time of year when I can put down some heated matting and get the first seed sowing of the year under way. First it will be spring cabbage and turnips in modules which will be planted out in the polytunnel beds for an early harvest and soon early peas to chit for a very early crop. With onions, I can't understand this passion for sowing seed on the shortest day and pricking on endlessly to put out in spring. For the same price as a packet of onion seed I can get 180 onion sets which I plant in pots in the greenhouse. By late winter they have made a great root system and healthy top growth, ready to be planted out under fleece at the right spacings to produce a really early and successful crop.

              • Today I bought some seeds from Poundland - Crocosmia lucifer, Pentland Javelin seed potatoes, Runner beans, Peas, Nasturtiums and Sweet Peas - some came with mini-propagators.
I also received some bare root strawberry plants from Linea. I've put the roots in some compost until I plant them.

                  • Bought an A4 hardback notebook so I can begin a gardening diary to start tomorrow. Hopefully with a sunny day forecast I will be able to write an entry tomorrow night!

                      • Went down the lottie for the first time this year - we had actual *sun*! Warm sun!

Mulched the rhubarb with compost, and started adding compost to the beds with the thinnest soil, which hopefully should help a bit. The compost rat was out today, but definitely still living there.

Checked all the spots I'd planted spring bulbs, looks like quite a few are coming up, but I've forgotten which I planted where... Oh well, should be a nice surprise later!

Pruned the gooseberry and made a start on one of the currants, but I'm not sure where I should be cutting back to, so decided to leave it 'til I checked first- besides, the effects of last night were showing, so I went home.
Still have enough decent compost to do the next worst bed, but I need to take the remaining parsnips out first.

                        • You cut currants where they are crossing/congested and/or old wood.

Today I have cut back the hedge, right to the wire, all fifty foot of it. I then raked out all the leaves, ground ivy and detritus. That lot got thrown over into the wood. I raked up all the leaves that have blown into corners, pots and back of poly/greenhouse. They filled the remainder of the leaf cube. I cleared the poly path and further Rockdusted and mulched. I hoed carefully between the alliums as it was green (algae?). I comfrey fed everything including the pots. Cleaned up what felt like thousands of pots, washed, rinsed and ready for the potting table. I cleaned up the terracotta ones and stacked them. Next in line was cleaning up the greenhouse. Floor swept out, canes tidied and out in bundles for the lotty, benches cleared ready for props. Emptied the potato sacks onto the newly dug bit from yesterday. The chooklies degrubbed it then dust bathed in it!
All in all, a productive but shattering day.
