I agree AP, that was suggested by a few places. Shame really. Aparrently they will not cause any damage to the red wrigglies (which are HUGE btw) so I'm content to try lowering the acidity in the compost to see if reduces the numbers.

If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

Been digging over part of the new plot, it will eventually be no dig though. But the top was a thick crust and lots of perrenial weeds to dig out. Will leave it to next week and layer with leaves, soil improver and anything else we can get our hands on. We may do a layer of cardboard too. Planted 2 of the fruit trees and dug some drainage. Ponds in and leaving it to fill naturally.
We loosely laid a path on the front half of the new allotment. The part we haven't dug is covered in cardboard for now. Still a lot of weeds under it!http://togrowahome.wordpress.com/ making a house a home and a garden home grown.

Set 60 mixed iris in seed tray. Set 24 mixed lillies in seed tray. Set 100 gladioli corms in seedtray.
All purchsed from Aldi at 99p per packet, 5 packets in all.
Hopefully thats the majority of my cut flowers taken care of for the coming year, and all for under a fiver.
Intend building a tall framework around the bed where I finally set them out, with a polythene top and debri mesh sides to keep the weather of them and save them along with my chrysanths, from getting battered by the wind.My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order

More weeding today around raspberries, mainly grass. The plot is looking good now, i think.........I think.... I'm ready, but I'm sure I'll find other stuff to do!
Helped another allotmenteer Mick, to move some topsoil into his raised beds.
Sowed "banana" shallot seeds I've forgotten about.

Thinking aout whatto do over the weekend, provided I can getpast the children's parties etc
Here are a few ideas:
Sow broad beans (outside)
Sow tomatos (in hot house - they will eventuially go outdoors I think this is too early)
Clear overgrown hedge
Get rid of accumluated piles of hedge clippings
Dismantle redundednt greenhouse to prepare for reuse
Sow leeks in pots (is this too early??)
Think about sowing brussel sprouts, winter/savoy/red cabbage PSB (again all too early??)
Mow lawn - yes really - which actually means discover the mower needs a service and taek it in.

Haha, our mower always needs to be taken in - I swear it spends more time travelling to and from the repairer than it spends in the yard!
I looked at my garden today. I picked off some tomatoes, some of the few that I have.
And that was it!Ali

Plucked up some courage and went into Muddy Bums bike shop and asked for cardboard boxes. I'm used to having strange looks but these were really strange
Hadn't realised the boxes were so big and solid! Fortunately, they fitted exactly into the car boot.
Came home and massacred an unflattened box with a Stanley knife. Then laid it out on my veggie patch. Rootled around for branches and bricks to stop them blowing into the neighbour's garden!
Perishing cold - ice on the water buckets again. My new LIDL thermometer says its 33.4F Glad to be back indoors.

Had a bonfire in incinerator bin.
Sowed some broad beans. Can't for the life of me remember what they were called. "express" I think. So long as they grow!! These were sown in toilet roll filled compost.
I have some paving slabs and blocks. I'll put these inbetween the 2 raised beds.
State of play of lottie!Attached Files

Took my in-laws to have a look at the allotment. Father-in-law agreed that there are some raspberry canes at the back, but also some other mystery fruit cane/bush with small prickles all over.
Checked the heater in the greenhouse. Temp has remained at over 8 deg c for last 48 hours so I am going to risk moving in some of the tomato seedlings. They will be put in a plastic covered greenhouse with some fleece over the top inside the heated greenhouse so hoping they will stay protected. I've decided to only put 2 of each variety in there to start with and make sure they are ok before putting the rest in.
Finally seen some movement from one broad bean seed out of the 25 or so I have planted over the last few weeks. Also finally some sign of life from the onion seeds and the red cardinal spinach has sprouted.Likac66
