  • Hacked a bit more at the hebe and conifer in the back garden, working towards removing them entirely. Partially emptied the pond now all the fish have died. Piled more of the branches I cut down last year into the green bin. Sowed Basil, Chillies, Sunflower, some blue flower I have been gifted and some very hopeful courgettes and squash XD They are on the warmest windowsill in the house.

    • Allotment today with my little helpers. They looked for worms while daughter dug over a bed and I cleared round the rhubarb and blackcurrants.

Also cut back the so@@ing blackberry that keeps invading from next door's plot.

        • Bought some more seet taters. I think the cold killed the first lot being as the soil froze solid :O
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

          • Evening! Went out to the greenhouse this morning to discover the heater had stopped working and it had dropped to -2 in there over night. I can't help thinking the tomatoes and peppers won't like that.

Husband tracked down and fixed the problem. I hope it keeps going tonight. Luckily they were all lidded over in plastic propagators so fingers crossed they will be ok.

Went up to the allotment and put some fleece on the potato bed, but it there wasn't enough to cover even half the bed. I started digging the area that the polytunnel is going to go in. I dug over 2sq metres out of 8 so that was a good start. Lots of couch grass but I pulled out as much root as I could. I plan to go up tomorrow to do the same amount again.

My 8yr old daughter made a little insect house from a kit she was given for Christmas and I took that up to the plot as well.

On the way home I stopped off at Lidl. They had coldframes for 20 so I picked one up. I haven't decided if it's going to stay at home or be up the plot yet. They also had fleece at a bargain price - 10 x 2 metres for 1.99 so I picked up a pack and will refleece the potato bed tomorrow.

                      • Bought and delivered to plot 6 bags of multi-compost and a bag of 6x, which I have never used before but told that is good.
Sowed 2 types of self-blanching celery, chives, mint and red florence onions.
Hoping the sunnier weather continues and warms up the soil!!!!

                        • I had a look at the kitchen garden where I planted the garlic a few weeks ago and one of the special little things is showing through the soil!!!
                          Go Nature!
I know its kids stuff but its still exciting to see Mustard growing in the pots in the greenhouse. I just happened to be walking past and noticed that it had flopped like a Beetles (fab four)hairdo and needed a drink desperately. I hope it hasn't died. It should have been eaten by now but I don't have any facilities and am living on dry bread 'butties' made of boiled ham and cottage cheese and the occasional banana butty.
Actually, thinking about it, I could have put some on my ham sandwich to spice it up a bit and treat my body to a bit of greenery. I'll cut some tomorrow and have a bash.
I'm massively excited about my one shoot of garlic though. I feel like a proper Percy.

                          • I forgot to mention that I had a look at the Rhubarb. It seems to have stalled a bit but it looks well and healthy. The plant that I put a pot over to force hasn't grown at all so I've taken it off and I will just leave it to nature. We can have Rhubarb when its ready and when nature intended us to have it. I was excited by the thought of Rhubarb crumble though and had the custard powder ready.
                            Ho Hum.

                              • I have spent some time in the greenhouse this morning. I decided to get a bit tougher with my headache, sore throat and runny nose, so I gave them the cold shoulder.
                                I planted, from memory:
                                Little Gem
                                Oregano
Put some peas between wet kitchen paper to give them a warm moist cuddle
                                Chives
                                Radish
                                Tomato
                                Cucumber
                                Spring onion
                                Parsley
I think a bit of mint..... such folly! it will be staying in a pot.. cheeky stuff that mint.
More stuff but I can't remember. I'm going out with my notebook (nooooo not a net notebook! its a pencil and a pad) to make proper note of what I have done.

Sweet William (from my daughters grandfathers plants) they are about 20 years old so I will have to see how they do.

Now then, a quick question about something I want to do this afternoon. Shall I plant some summer bulbs in little pots to get them going given the terrible spring we are having or shall I just leave them for another few weeks?
I'm wondering if I might get my botty smacked for asking here, perhaps I should have asked in another thread......... hope nobody sees me tiptoeing away from this post!
