  • Planted two different types of spuds (first earlies, and second earlies) which took ages as its the first time I've done them in open ground! Very satisfying work though.

Made a garlic bed and planted up 3 cloves of spring garlic, then devised an elaborate net made of all kinds of junk to stop the pidgeons eating the bulbs!

Played another round of plant tetris on the kitchen windowsill - I lost again! Tomorrow is a big day of sowing for me as I am busy for a while after that so tried to clear some space, but this was in vain.

Watered and weeded my strawberry bed

Going to have another day on the plot tomorrow, got onions to go in!!

        • Dug out and built another raised bed then planted some potatoes in it.

Planted out some more red baron onion sets.

Looked longingly at the hole I've dug for my greenhouse and wished I had time to finish the job but there's too much other stuff to do so it'll have to wait until May.

But I did take a piccy of the hole - I dug out all that chalk with a fork and shovel.

And it was a beautiful day!

                • Mr Peppermint and I spent all day in the garden Went out at 9.30 this morning and finally gave up at 8.40 this evening. A couple of short breaks for lunch and dinner and we were straight back out again. Slow cookers are wonderful things

My Peppermint spent the day digging post holes and cementing in 8 foot posts. This is for the fencing to go around out polytunnel. We are on a very exposed site and the polytunnel will need all the protection we can give it.

I extended two 30 foot beds, width-wise. They were four foot beds, now they are five foot beds. I know the recommended size is four foot, but I found that it doesn't quite have the width for two rows of some veggies e.g. potatoes, peas and beans. It was quite a job getting down the rows of peas last year. It means the paths have narrowed to two foot but I can still get my trolley down

Stacked the grass turves upside down at the edge of the garden. I'll wrap them in plastic later in the week as I have more turves to cut this week. It looks a bit like Hadrian's Wall and has the added advantage of providing a temporary windbreak.

I was determined to actually plant something today. Popped 7 Rocket seed potatoes in last thing tonight. Probably a mistake, but this time last year I had all my first earlies planted. Today we got up and we had a sprinkling of snow

It's on a slope. Our whole garden's on a slope. The door will be at ground level at the front and facing south, so the back will be on the north side anyway. I think it will be okay...

                    • Second day of a golf weekend away... great weather for golf, it's just a shame to not be able to get out into the garden or the allotment in such great spring gardening weather!

                      • Yesterday I was just delighted to be able to do anything at all! Lovely morning, so planted my early potatoes - Lady Christl - yes I know the ground is probably too cold, but last year they were planted during 2nd week in March!! Can't wait any longer. Having done that I transplanted my broad beans (although they are under a mini poly tunnel/cloche), planted some more directly, and some Douce Provence peas and some carrots. Came away feeling so much happier.

                              • Took the kids down to the allotment and we planted loads of Douce Provence peas. Must have planted about 150 I think. Just concerned that they might all get eaten by mice now. Not sure we planted them deeply enough. Might go and check on them in a couple of days.

I've planted them in short rows going across the beds rather than long rows. I've put bamboo sticks either end and plan to put string across these. We planted a row of peas on either side of where the string will go.

Also dug out a bit more of the polytunnel bed and did a bit of weeding.
