Built a 15ft long, 6ft high bean frame in what can only be described as wishful thinking, I was planning to do 8ft canes but most of my family are shortarses so I thought id make life easy for them as they will be looking after the lotty for me when on holidays etc. I Also hammered in 4 metal pipes along the line of raspberry canes and lined it with string and wire to contain them.
Sun, wind, lashing rain and hail showers - throughout the day.
Between the hail showers OH and I riddled the top soil that came out of the base of the shed and filled the 3'x3' bed he built yesterday. Will be sowing parsnips in this, this week
During the tea-break I popped 'How to grow winter vegetables' into my Amazon basket. Looking forward to reading that cover to cover
We were both chatting about how content we are when working in the garden - and would much prefer to be at home working on the garden than going to work. We'd have no trouble at all filling our time
Pinched out the top of my sweet peas.
Did a quick repair of my greenhouse. One of the cats jumped on the lid and it collapsed inwards As annoyed as I am I would of loved to have seen the cats face when it gave in on them and they did only damage one sweet pea.
Planted out my Japanese Wineberry at last, only had it since the 12th February
Planted out module grown "Twinkle" peas in half a row.
In another half row, "Speedy" broad beans. Grown in compost filled toilet rolls.
Need to get some more onions planted and some seed sown "banana" shallots, next time!
Didn't do much in the way of gardening this weekend. I had planned on sowing some beans and salad at home but the cold temperatures didn't encourage me. I did pop to the allotment this afternoon to have a check round. Pulled some weeds and spotted my first potato shoot coming up. Covered it with a bit of soil. One of the radishes I planted at the start of March was actually pink and up out of the ground but it looks like the slugs might have been at it already! Peas are coming up well.
At home, all the extra mange tout is coming up as well as numerous brassicas. But I really must plant some more salad and get the first lots of beans into germinate in the greenhouse.
More digging on the allotment - I've now dug half of bed 5 and half of bed 6 so I'm ready for the sweetcorn once it warms up a bit. Meanwhile Mrs H lifted some more rotten boards that used to surround patches of ground.
Oh and I sowed some more carrots under fleece, these were "Berlicum 2 Berjo".
The first couple of rows (Amsterdam) are showing, as are the peas (Onward) and the onion sets (Red Baron). Exciting, it is!
Next weekend: shed!!
My gardening blog: In Spades, last update 30th April 2018.
Chrysanthemum notes page here.
Busy weekend. With the help of my better half, dug out and sieved all last year's leaf mould, and tipped the 2 builders bags of leaves collected last autumn in their place. Planted out some broad beans and sowed more of the crimson flowered. Did the elbows on the tomato plants, and admired the radishes coming up in the parsnip row. Juggled pots in the greenhouse to work out what I'm keeping and what is going to the hort soc sale in 3 weeks.
Potted on triffids. Lots and lots of squashes. As well as some sweetcorn. Might have to sow a handful more of sweetcorn to get an adequate planting block.
Over the weekend I had a big bonfire, dug over about 6 ft in rows of the plot, tried to salvage the strawberry bed (sort of failed) and planted red onion sets. I also bought a large bag of half price seed potatoes even though I said I wasn't going to plant potatoes this year...
