  • After work I pricked out ruby chard and late british queen caulies, potted on a couple of aubs and moved them into the gh, rescued various plant pots (empty luckily) from being taken for a run round the garden, made jam ......
S*d the housework I have a lottie to dig
a batch of jam is always an act of creation ..Christine Ferber

    • Cut a All Year Round butterhead lettuce last night - about 1 foot diameter.

Took cloche off french beans so they can catch the predicted rain today. Must remember to put back on tonight.

          • Pricked out 3 Merino toms. I sowed the three seeds a fortnight ago - they were taken from some lovely tasting San Marzano mini plums from T***O. I do hope I get good plants from them. It's persisting it down and blowing a gale, so there's little I can do outside.

              • Potted on my last 4 tom plants that I've been keeping for spares, then I made paper pots because I didn't want to go back across the yard during the hailstone.

                  • Potted on nine beafsteak toms into 4" pots and stood in there final positions to aclimatise. Dug over my pantiled bed. Raked even then gave a sprinkling of dolomite lime (my plot is very acid)
I was going to grow swedes in this bed but may put carrots in instead. Stuck a few hoops on to afix my enviromesh to but it started raining heaby before I got the hoops level and ready for the mesh.

                          • Went to the allotment to check on the fleeced over courgettes and the polytunnel after nearly 40mph winds today. Had to put a couple more bricks on the fleece but the polytunnel was all in good shape - I had visions of it being blown over.

I have potato plants popping up all over the allotment though that I need to pull out or snap off.

                            • Been back on the pantile bed today. It was originally going to be for my swedes but I finished up sowing three lots of carrots in it.
Stretched the sheet of enviromesh over the hoops to find it wasn't wide enough.Dug each hoop up and buried the ends further down to drop the overall height of the hoops......................still didn't fit.

Need some lateral thinking says I so I'll just go and have a seat in the sunshine and give it some thought.
Sure enough 'a cunning plan' came to mind!
Layed some round posts that I had lying around on top of the pantiles and fastened to the bottom edge of the sheet with bent over panel pins. Stretched the sheet over the top and did the same at the other side. Had to cut posts to fit with a rusty saw and an axe!
                              Alls well that ends well!

Did a bit of weeding on another bed until I remebered I have a 10k race to run tomorrow and should really rest.

Only thing I need to worry about now is where to put my swedes?

                              • Spent hours on the plot. Planted out all of the squashes, cukes, and running beans. The covered the squashes. Sweetcorn also planted out.

                                Plugged in marigolds.

Tool mother and her sister to the plot; so ears got bashed over everything.
