  • It's been raining all day, so a perfect day to start with sowing seeds into modules whilst sat at the kitchen table. Toms have been sown, Shirley, Roma and gardeners delight. Tender stem green sprouting broccoli and the large headed Samson broccoli/ Calabrese are all sown and about 30 Leeks seeds along with and two types of cauliflower and cabbage. My tropical fish tank hood is now acting as a extended propagator for the large tray of tomato seeds. .
The first lot of seed sowing this year. I have been itching to get started but the past years have taught me it's pretty pointless starting to early. They come out the same an catch up as fast if you start in March with much less mothering needed an less stress from leggy seedlings sitting around in pots.

        • Yesterday, sifted some soil where the parsnips are going to go, covered some small beds with black fabric, started to weed what will be the potato bed. Dug last of the leeks and remaining sprout plant. Stood and admired lone rhubarb leaf. Gossiped with neighbouring allotmenteers

Meant to go back today but a) it was raining and b) I hurt! That sifting uses peculiar muscles. And I only did about 1/10th of what I need to...

          • Moved my fruit trees today to sunnier spot and gave them a good feed. I bought them from Aldi last year and look a lot better this year, in rude health in fact.
            Planted garlic, and peas.
            Planted salad leaves under fleece.
Put loads of strawberry runners in pots.
Planted loads of flower seeds in my propagator.

            • Busy weekend!

Finished clearing overgrown vine and ornamental trees from overshading veg bed. Cleared out my black plastic, picked off all snails and slugs and threw into road (slugs and snails) with happy help from Master and Miss Loudbarker. Shifted four wheel barrows of beautiful compost from heat to mulch two beds. Covered one with black plastic (leeks will be planted here) but left other bare (will be brassica, lettuce, parsnips, beetroot, carrots etc.

Cleared about half of one bed of overwintered weeds: more to do before composting and then early potatoes and courgettes through black plastic.

              A good saturday afternoon's work.

Sunday raining hard all day.. Have tried chitting parsnips indoors for the first time.

                • Planted a clump of rhubarb where I had stripped out some rasp canes.

Dug up a gooseberry plant that i had layered last year. Its for my mate at work and has six verical stems. He can either plant it as it is or divide it into six rooted portions. Layering with bricks has really paid off for me.

                  • I planted my first GYO veg today, red baron onion seeds in one square foot of my raised bed. More will be planted in 2 week periods.

Also sowed babycorn in 'Klix' (coffee machine) cups and strawberry, sweet pepper & chilli peppers in cardboard egg boxes & left them in the unheated porch for max. sunshine.

                    Fingers crossed )

                    • I planted some daffodils in some pots quickly as someone gave me a pack they found in their garage. The sell by date was nov 2010.

                      • I attempted the rescue of my spring onion tray, chard, three types of toms and peas that all came off the shelves in my blowaway. It seems the wind ripped off one of the ropes, so now I need to move the bloody thing so I can peg it down more securely. Bleh. I think I might have to invest in a proper greenhouse.

                        • Transferred six very heavy and wet bags of horse poo from another mums car to mine.....in the freezing cold rain. Then went staight to lottie to transfer them to my compost/hotpile so they wouldn't stink the car out....the result? My fingers may just have chillblains and the car still stinks....roll on Friday when the poo is bagged in garlic bags!

                            • Ashamed to say today was my first visit to the lotty this year!
I covered a 1\4 of the plot with cardboard to worry about either later in the season or next year.
I weeded what will be the brassica bed, shifted 10 barrows of manure onto my plot, moved my bean arches to their new position and weeded the strawberry bed. I am now quite broken!!
