Dug over a bed for my swedes to be planted in and some more sown in situ. Just dug it,raked it amd limed it, didn't get time to do any planting!
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)
- took a few groups out to the Wildlife Garden at lunchtime. They're getting very good at finding & identifying the creatures: mating snails, Red Admiral caterpillars on the nettles, hoverflies, newts, frogs, worms, millipedes, centipedes and a HUGE black cocoon which was full & twitching before half term, and is now EMPTY ! Possibly a hawk moth
- emptied the compost from the rotted stuff: lost a lot of beans, corn & squashes. It was too cold for too long
- planted more beans
- planted out sweet peas & lots of other pretties
- cut & chopped alfalfa & comfrey (and weeds) and left on soil surface as a nutritious mulch
- emptied out November's sacks of semi-rotted leaves, and mixed them with grass clippings (to speed up decomposition) and repacked them in black sacks, tucked away under the shrubs
- started sowing brassicas
- and carrots (late, to beat the fly)
Sowed some more French beans and cut and come again salad leaves.
Found final places for some strawberries and marigolds I had lying around.
Planted some chard out.
Realised I've forgotten to write what went where in my 'extra' sowings of various leafy things. No idea if the things sprouting are veg, weeds or leftover flowers yet.
Also realised it's time to stop sowing, as I'm almost out of space & soil. Still have about 12 tomato plants to deal with though, at least they are too small to worry about yet!
Well not today but last night, I ate my first tomato It was such a surprise. I thought I noticed a little turning at the weekend and then there she was. Lovely. Its Maskotka so it's turned out a good early variety as promised.
