            • Yesterday I spent a couple of hours up at the plot. Weeded half a path - it was mostly grass and it was very tough to dig out. Took an hour just to do half of it.

Picked a carrier bag full of various salad leaves and some radishes.

Planted two more cucumbers (muncher) in the polytunnel and picked off side shoots on the tomatoes.

Picked a few peas and baby broad beans that hubby threw in his smoked haddock chowder.

In the greenhouse at home I wondered why two cucumber plants have decided to die completely and all the chilli and pepper plants look very unhappy. There are definitely signs of greenfly so I have sprayed them all and they do look a bit perkier today.

Loads of mangetout ready to pick in the garden - must pick it tomorrow.

                Tonight
                Tidied up greenhouse;
Emptied pots of scorched plants to clear space. Potted on healthy sage, pepper and basil plants.
Put saucers I got cheap on Thursday at the supermarket under pots that didn't have them
Removed shelves from east side of greenhouse to give plants some air, space and light.
Cut up about a dozen 2 Litre milk cartons into strip for labels (will cut the pointy ends when I can be bothered)
Gave the compost heap a bit of a turn
                Picked gastropods
Made some soup with stuff from the garden (totally unconnected with last task)
Looked out sample containers for plant and animal specimens
Ha ha! Made me laugh. Like the milk carton to plant label vibe also.

                • Mrs Loudbarker has buzzed of to Florence so I have garden and Miss and Master Loudbarker to myself.

Sowed early and late PSB seeds in greehouse, four of each and also eight swedes.

Pulled out last year's PSB, harvested/pulled out cauliflower/calebrase, spring cabbage. The spring cabbage could a waited a bit but I needed the space clear for the next task, which was: -

spreading home-made compost where the brasicas had been and planting 99 leeks (apprx) (about 55 Musselbrough and 44 Bleu de Solaise which The Real Seed Company say is more vigorous and grows faster and bigger - we shall see. I added a few chicken dung pellets as well.

Intersown between the leeks were carrots, from the left, one row of Giant Red (Real Seeds - said to be Italian) two rows of Autumn King, two rows of James Scarlett Intermediate and one row of D'Eysines (said to be french). The theory is that the smell of tthe leeks will deter carrot fly- but I will put fleece over the lot to keep outthe leek moth!

Watered soft fruit, tomatos, courgettes, cucumbers.

Erecetd bamboos round tomatos in halos and will tie in next week end. Armpitted tomatos.

Harvested lettuce and a good haul of broad beans. First signs of blackfly has arrived. First signs of whte fly on the brqsicas as well so a good think Ihauled them out.

Tried to identify my greenhouse (bought by late dad circa mid 80s) on the web on the off chance that it is still made or additional parts available. Found it within half an hour. It's a Halls popular.
Sprayed self-sourced nitrogen on lawns, flower beds where needed and veg that isn't close to ground.
Chopped some stinging nettles from the woods. Left it a bit late in year, most have developed seeds so only harvested the young ones.
                    Fell asleep

                    Monday
Up before the larks, but not before the seagulls.
Looked out the window, though "nah!"
Left the front door open last night, nothing appeared to be missing but there'll be moths everywhere.
Run, gym, work, gym, college, couldn't be bothered going to gym again.
Messed up my spreadsheet with APG III / Cronquist ontologies
Drew a chart of insect families (work in progress)
                    Watered in the greenhouse.
I have some tomatoes! (must be doing something right)
Sowed some Oregano seeds (little wee tiny fichery wee things, sow thinly the seed packet says?
Weeded a row of lobed weedy-looking things with taproots that were in a row in crowded mainly-Amaranthaceae-but-also-salad (short-a**e stuff) bed.
Poked them back in as I seem to remember planting a row of Eruca Sativa (arugula / rocket) there (labels gone, AutoCAD takes ages to do anything, if it even executes on my 20th century home PC)
Looked up up rocket and weed images and none the wiser.
Spinach looks like it is going to flower soon.
Set out rucksack and waterproof bags for spring tide algae collection tomorrow / Wednesday / Thursday or when I can fit it in.

                    • Dug over a small bed and dibbled some leek seedlings in. Watered well.

Found a pot full of brussel sprout seedlings I'd forgotten about lurking under a cabbage leaf.

Only one bed left to plant so will get them in tomorow hopefully.

                      • Spent 7 hours weeding to catch up after doing nothing for 6 weeks whilst waiting for child No.2 to arrive. Now she is here 3 weeks off work so it's catch up time. Also set up lots of squirrel traps as they are after the strawberries (buying cheap strawberries as bait so I can enjoy home grown doesn't make that much sense however).

                        • Over the weekend I pulled up half the radishes which have gone to seed after the hot weather last week :-(
Repotted more tomatoes to their final locations.

                          Repotted all my basil too.

Shifted some stuff around to try and make more room and did some makeshift tying up of the potatoes as the foliage is taking over the planet.

                          Sowed final baby carrots.

                          • Yesterday Mr H made me my first ever brassica net cage out of a few bits of old baton, some willow rods and some plastic netting. Bit wonky looking but should do the job. Very pleased with it. Popped in some kale seedlings underneath it next to the little PSBs.
Potted up cucumber plants into the next size pots in the blowaway. Wanted to start hardening them off but it was blowing a gale (again) so couldn't.
Strimmed some grass and assorted weeds but line broke on strimmer and couldn't open spool so hacked everywhere with the shears instead - good exercise!

                              • Yesterevening fed the toms, potted on some minibell toms in the stayput, watered the pumpkins and courgettes. Might try a last ditch attempt (like Binley) at some parsnip, so far there's been zero germination.
