If you and I come up with the same technique with a bunch of grapes, it may be time you sort help

    • Watered and managed not to fall flat on the lawn this time. Noticed that the Long Red Florence onions are indeed long and red, so watered them as well.

        • Mulched the other side of the food forest and watered it.

The boys mulched up the front garden and half the first garden. I didn't water there yet tho.

Eyed off the broccoli which I was planning to let self-seed, but you know, I could have a few more bits surely?

The Millers lettuce is puffing up and looking good.

Half weeded the front broad beans.

And the man next door has burnt some of the troublesome weeds for me.

          • Went to allotment as usual after work. I'd been working outside in the cold and wet all day so decided to light the woodburner in the greenhouse. After sorting the chooks I plonked myself down on my seat in front of the woodburner with my feet up and ate four allotment grown peaches and a bunch of grapes!

            • - cut back the hawthorn & dog rose hedging on the perimeter fence. Looks much neater, lets more sunlight in to my neighbour's plot, and has provided lots of pea sticks for the spring

              - picked 2 carrier bags of dry French beans. The kids will shell them in Garden Club
              - another bag of Not-Quite-Dry French beans, were shelled and put in the freezer
              - the bean stalks were roughly chopped and left on the soil as a mulch
              - seeds of flowers were sprinkled around the perimeter fence
              - deadheaded the sunflowers & sweet peas to prolong the flowers (I have NEVER had sweet peas last beyond June before, this year's been amazing for them)
              - did a little weeding, like 6 tufts of grass & bindweed: the Chop n Drop mulch is excellent for weed suppression
              - bought 120 sets of Jap onion & shallot, planted them in modules in the gh
              - cut back the rampant Iceberg rose & put the 12" bits of stem in the soil to make new plants

                • Brought home 2 sackfuls of fresh horse muck and spent the morning filling my new hotbin with assorted shredded plant material and paper mixed with muck. Left it to stew, trying (not very successfully) to resist the temptation to keep lifting the lid to see if anything was happening. Rescued several worms (if it gets as hot as it is supposed to they will die in there).
Baled several gallons of water out of the drip trays under my pots - all of them were full to the brim after about 2 inches of rain yesterday.
Harvested tomatoes and a huge courgette which had either grown 4 inches over night or been hidden by leaves when I checked yesterday. Made courgette and tomato soup.

                    • Today I spent a lot of hours chopping. I made 3litres of courgette chutney. I was hoping to do some courgette and. Cucumber pickle but lost the will to chop...tomorrow is a fresh day! 😀

                      • Weeding and tidying at the allotment.

Topped up the compost heap and chopped the comfrey again so the sun can get to the beans.

                        Picked four more courgettes.

                        • Harvested some cukes and made cucumber and avocado soup.

                          DIVINE!

And simple - blitz 2 cukes and 2 avocados together with a dollop of Greek yoghurt, some lemon juice and a dash of Worcester sauce. Season to taste and add a splash of water if it's too thick. You can garnish with a bit of chopped red onion, tomato and more cuc and avocado (marinate them in a bit of olive oil first). Such a good way to use up the cukes.

I've only got a hand held blender but it coped fine.

                            • Spent 3 hours at the allotment work party, weeding and generally clearing the communal areas so they all look lovely.

I took an allium head home and will remove the seeds later. Now off to the garden centre to buy some pots and some compost to pot my kaffir lime and Chilean guavas that arrived in the week. Then home to make some pickled cucumbers and courgettes that didn't get done yesterday.
