    Hi Paula,

I did mine in modules as the armies of slugs stationed in every corner of my garden watch my every movement with great interest. I read that you need to be careful not to disturb the roots too much as this will possibly lead to premature bolting. The first lot I did have mostly got to a useable size - but I guess I disturbed them a little as a few are beginning to bolt now.

If I get around to sowing any more (perhaps a bit late now?) I'll do them directly into containers and not move them.
While wearing your night clothes, plant cucumbers on the 1st May before the sun comes up, and they will not be attacked by bugs.

    • Took down the climbing French beans, harvested the remaining green patty pans, and picked some chard, picked last of beetroot, and pickled it, ( only 1 large jar)

Also cleared out freezer, amazing what you find!

      • Tried to break the replacement loppers by cutting up some recently pruned apple and hazel branches into woodstove sized kindling.
The loppers are still in one piece - must try harder next time
Still lots of brash to clear but the garden looks a lot more open now

Try making some newspaper pots that way you won't get root disturbance here's a link to making your own tool :-

I made mine with some pipe we had laying around, for the 'Dome Slip Cap' I pushed a piece of wood inside the smaller of the two pieces of pipe just to seal the end. Seems to work as well and the newspaper soon bio-degrades in the soil.

          • (Yesturday) Rushed to the allotment straight from work

Its getting darker now and I only have a half hour window when I finish work to get to the allotment before it gets too dark to see.

Mostly just keeping on top of the weeds, making sure the slugs haven't launched their attack.

I, um, er, have a paper potter thingy and tend to use it with gusto at the beginning of the year and then run out of steam. Makes perfect sense though for things like Pak Choi. Must try harder

I've got a wooden one that was a prezzie but I use the home made mostly because its smaller.

                • Let the clear up begin!
Planning out what will go where.
Planted out into poly, winter salad leaves and oriental leaves.

                  • Went for a walk along the seafront to show the grandchildren the waves crashing against the seawall. Too windy to do any gardening, but I have packed some bean seeds into envelopes for next year's sowings.

                    • Took out the courgettes and cucumbers that have finished then covered the last couple that still have fruits on them with fleece.

Washed a stack of plant pots that I've been putting of doing.

                      • Picked more toms from the greenhouses and a hiding cucumber. Found a surprise courgette. Neglected to fleece anything and noted that the things I fleeced last night had become unfleeced.

Put bottle cloches on a few things.

Did not do much else on account of failing light and the following:

                        Furtling / Pulling Warning
Nursing a sliced index finger (deep cut on the nuckley bit above finger nail) obtained whilst pulling up a long stubborn parsnip yesterday. The top greenery had come away in my hands, so I dug around the top to get some purchase. Evidently there was something a bit sharp down there. I only noticed when the blood was dripping on everything.

                        • Back from a month in Portugal - allotment looking a bit overgrown and neglected! Tried to rescue topsy turvy blowaway by roping it to the fence. Started strimming all the foot-long grass - got a few square feet done! Picked lots of apples, cookers & eaters. Legged it home to get logburner lit!

                          • Beautiful weather yesterday and today.
                            Dug over half my garden.
Cut down the peas, pulled up the last of the brocolli and planted out my garlic.
Netted the lot as I have two cats that were just waiting for an opertunity.
Tidied the greenhouse and took out some of the tomatoes that have finished.
Still have a great crop of chillis.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

                            • Barrowed more horse poo from the main gate to my plot.

                              Picked more beans for shelling.

Hid in the shed eating biscuits with littlest helper during a heavy shower.

Cut back next door's blackberry where it was encroaching on the communal path.

                              • Cleared some runaway raspberry canes and brambles on a patch of ground where some small trees have been cut down recently. Hoping to plant broad beans or onions there in a week or so.
There's something very satisfying about clearing ground cover - seeing that lovely brown soil for the first time for years. Hoping for lots more veggies next year
Lovely warm day - a pleasure to be outdoors
