  • A local furniture maker v kindly gave me a massive sack of wood shavings which I've now partly laid down over some heavy duty black placky to make paths at Lottie. Have not tried this sort of thing before and hope it doesn't blow away as it's quite lightweight. I think the rain will dampen it down tho.

        • Today I walked round the allotment with the rest of the committee doing plot inspections. I think that there'll only be 3 letters being sent out. Which isn't bad really ....

Also managed to get half a load of manure. So I've been moving that up onto my plot most of the day. Probably got around 10 more wheelbarrows full to move. If the weather is as bad as forecast it can stay where it is the the time being!

Wish my council would do that! There are so many waisted plots it's so annoying when I know there is a waiting list!

            • There's a few of us on the committee pushing the rest to be a little tuffer. Nobody wants to be unpopular but it's not fair on everyone else. Where luckily as the committee works hard to keep the allotment in good order. Probably why I volunteered to join the committee. I'd get in touch with the council department and report them. Mansfield's not far from us. I've seen some plots on the way to Forest Town that look a lillte run down...

                • Should have posted this last night - just did a couple of hours down the allotment, removing nails and screws from the plyboard panels of the old shed I knocked down. The panels are now ready to be used on a new project. Just gotta think one up!!!

Good for you, CS. We've got quite a few plots at our lotties that are hardly ever worked. The one next door to mine gets covered in 8 foot high Himalayan balsam every year too. And folks on the waiting list walk past and have mini rants on the subject, often to yours truly. I don't blame them! It's frustrating but the local council have a 'hands off' approach. Maybe complaining would galvanise them but I know my plot neighbour had family tragedy 3 yrs ago and I'd hate to be a snitch.

                      • Lit the woodburner with the intention of doing a bit of pottering in the greenhouse, which didn't happen in the end!
I had half a bed of spuds still to dig so dug those up managing to spear quite a few with the fork. Decent sized Maxine redskin spuds though.
Covered the whole bed with soggy cardboard then put two wheelbarrow loads of straw and two barrow loads of hoss muck spread out on top. During this time I'd let the chooks out to roam so they benefited from any worms or juicy vegetation I dug up. Washed the spuds and set them out to harden there skins and dry out.
I grow some climbing French beans (Cobra I think?) up the ridge of my greenhouse on canes. The dried out pods were hanging so I collected a half a carrir bag full to dry out completely at home. Once shelled these will be my seed for next years crop.
Gathered ANOTHER picking of calabrese shoots for supper. Deffo the most productive veg I've grown as they have been producing tasty side shoots since September!
Shifted my onions and leeks seedlings into the light at home (windowsill) lest they get leggy.
Next job in the greenhouse (which was supposed to be done today) is to drop the grapevine canes away from the glass and rig up a support for them about six inches away from the glass to stop the leaves getting scorched and support hopefully the masses of grapes I'll have next year!

                        • Started building my rain harvesting system today . . .

. . . dug 3 of the 4 post holes and fitted the posts, no concrete just packed stones collected from the allotment.

Will need to dismantle the existing compost heap tomorrow to install the 4th post and hopefully get the frame for the roof on.

                          • Today I got round to moving the last of my manure off my neighbours plot. Long story but I bought it off him last Sunday and he's going to order some more. Its just about filled two pallet compost bins. I had to bag up what I had left from last year. So I could store it all till needed. I now have 12 bags of very well rotted cow manure ready for my potato bed. I'm going back to putting the muck in the trench this year instead of manuring all the potato bed and feeding the weeds.

Confucious, he say, if glasshoppel puts the watel stolage containel (excuse my language)outwith the structure, you will have a nice area available for dry storage, indeed, if you clad the structure with plywood or similar, you will have a lovely shed
