  • Went down to plan a shelf for the shed but couldn't help do something with the ground so got my herb garden and strawberry patch cut out and dug. I may actually be ready for spring yet!

Cheers Chris, yes I took early retirement & moved to pastures new. Have now got some landshare & things are looking good. I've still got the kite to put up & get the beds ready.............I don't have time to go to work anymore............

      • Looking at the weather forecast I'm not going to get anything done outside today, but yesterday I got down to the allotment and
        - put up 2 shelves in the shed then tidied up all of the junk in there
        - piled up some more rubbish for removal
        - dug a few square metres of a new bed on the least wet part of the plot where the rubbish was, got lots of bindweed roots out.

          • Moved the tomato seedlings to under the new growlights. Sowed some pak choi and spinach. Harvested some salad leaves and a tomato for lunch and the last of the Desiree main crop potatoes from the garage.

            • Picked the bins up, watched the rain through the windows, pushed the dog out for a wee (she don't like rain).

Cooked brunch for 3 of the grandchildren. 9 year old boy eats more than me

Playing wordgames with said grandchildren cos it's too bladdy wet to go out anywhere.

              • Ripped out my mate's sunflower which has been dead months but he didn't want to go near it because it had gone a little nasty, then went back to mine for a little pottering around. I assembled the second strawberry planter, re-potted my horseradish, and repotted my dwarf pomegranate and brought it from the lounge window to the kitchen window. I'd kept it inside out of the weather, but being in direct sunlight had started coming out of dormancy. Hopefully repotting it and in a North facing window will divert it's energies back to the roots. If not and it continues to develop foliage, it's no hardship as it will be kept till all fears of frosts are gone.

I tried taking sonme more photo's for the blog, but they're a bit gritty and dull, so I'm going to see if I can tidy those up a bit before posting, and I might assemble the last of my Spotlight gas lights later today. I did one to test it a few weeks ago and secured it to the fence with gardening wire. Despite it not gassing propery due to temperatures, it seems like a decent light. I have another three to assemble and fit mantles to, then I can get them out in the garden or shed and get a bit of kitchen space back

                • Moved Kelsae and Ailsa Craig from prop to growlights.

Persuaded son to come to the plot with me despite the rain.

Moved timber that we've been making the new beds from.

Put down weed control fabric beneath the fruit trees to prepare the ground for new currants that are on order.

                  Relocated the rhubarb (again!)

                  Got very wet!!

                  • Didn't manage to get out till after lunch due to the persistent................. Anyway, I managed to finally finish netting the cage, secured the hoops & laid the boards for the beds. Fingers crossed & weather permitting, I should be able to fill the beds & chip the path tomorrow.

                        • Bought two basil plants yesterday, so need to find a pot to put them in for the summer. Something with deep enough base so they can survive the next few weeks of intense heat. It's been hard not having basil this year.
Need to get son to help me repot the hazel nut trees into bigger pots so they also can survive until the temperature drops enough for them to go into the ground.

And some watering will be needed, and some tomatoes and grape vines to tie up. Nice to have even half a day back in the garden.

                            • Harvested two large almost ripe passion fruit from the Passiflora edulis vines in the conservatory. Normally at this time of year they are dying back from the cold, but since the autumn they have continued to flower and set fruit. Haven't tasted them yet but if they are as nice as the summer ones we are in for a winter treat!

Thanks for the link Mothhawk! I saw this soup a while back and meant to make it but forgot where I'd seen it so that's brilliant. Have got so many Jerusalem Artichokes it's silly. Have you tried this recipe?Jerusalem artichoke & horseradish soup | BBC Good Food It's also very nice.
