  • Fought the elements, made 5 raised beds & just put them on the soil, no doubt I will be playing chess with them till I'm happy with their final positions before filling.

    • I watched the rain running down the windows . Did a single invoice for a job which has finished as my customer has gone into permanent care. Washed the tops of the kitchen units. Isn't life joyful

If you don't cut down autumn raspberry canes they will crop earlier on these canes whilst still sending up new shoots. Some people will leave half the canes from the year before to get an earlier crop. I think you may risk exhausting the plant if you leave too many from the previous year.

Sowed 25 compost filled toilet rolls with "Express" broad beans. Left in the polytunnel to germinate. Also sowed some lettuce seeds, "lollo rosso","cos", "little gem" to grow in the border.

I shall sort them out this week end. Thanks

              • Does that apply to canes new in the ground last year? I bought a couple from Morrisons, which gave us a handful of rasps last year. I was looking at them just this morning, and they're just a few sticks atm. If I cut them back them there would be nothing left. Should I leave it a year or two before I start cutting back?
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

                • Just having a break from the elements. Have knocked together another 4 raised beds for the chess board. That's 9 so far & still more needed..........

                      • Came home from work via Aldi, and picked up a James Grieve apple tree and a tub of daffs. Ditched the daffs in the garden then went inside for the waterproofs, secateurs and matches.

Under gas lighting I half potted up two upright planters with old compost (bulk for topping off with fresh later), shifted a few bits about, potted up the apple tree and added some rootgrow and slow release granules. I then stood back and looked at it, lopped off the top 30" and went next door to cadge some rooting compound. The offcut is sat in seed compost now, hoping I'll get two trees for the price of one. I've probably gone about it all wrong, but for £4 I'll take that chance

Then it was off up to the chippy for a chip butty and a spring roll as a reward for my efforts

                          • Plot 28 that's a bit sad!

AP I didn't know whether to like your post about not spilling your cuppa, or dislike hurting your shoulder.

Yesterday I pumped water, then watered the garden and did loads of washing. Today finish watering the garden, and paint the horses hooves (pink or purple? No, oil actually. So dry their hooves are bad news)

                            • Made some fresh bread to eat with home grown salad for lunch. Took some photos in the sunshine for the 2014 diary thread. Sowed some spinach and peas and put up some netting ready for the early peas. Weeded the pansies. Run out of things to do in the garden now

                              • Pricked out some Japanese peppers. Moved my chillies out the heated prop into a unheated prop on the kitchen windowsill. I'll prick them out when there stood upright.
