What I did today 2012-2014

Strimmed the garden again, 2nd time this week and its upto nearly a meter high, this must be supergrass of some sort it has barley type seeds on the top like thin ears of corn with sharp spikes

Went to a couple of DIY shops and bought some grafted grape vines for 3.99 lev each ( about 1.50 ) they seem very well rooted , sold bare root wrapped in damp sawdust , only about 15 inch high but masses of roots and loads of named varieties were available ( no idea what varieties they are though as I havent translated them from Cyrillic yet, I went by pictures..... size, number of grapes and colour!)



While I was there I also bought an automatic watering system to link to the well and a pump for it to water the garden if i go out and it gets hotter.

Watered everything in the greenhouse: Angelle tomatoes, red frills mustard, little gem lettuce, pea shoots,fig and my mystery bell peppers. Last time I posted in this thread I believed they were self seeded chillies, but it seems supermarket peppers germinated in my homemade compost. Since they were free and I eat peppers often, I haven't much to lose by growing them on and they are starting to set fruit. Sowed a few more French breakfast radish.

Went shopping for the day..........................only went for a pint 'o milk & kem back wi 2 10ft x 8ft kites.......................I couldn't resist as they were knocked down from 89 squid to 39 squid...........................dearest pint 'o milk I've ever bought.

Have written a letter to the local council today asking whether I can take over the abandoned-for-four-years-now problem plot next to mine. AM I CRAZY? Probably. But after four years of having an allotment I have the delusion that I know what I'm doing and might be able to rescue it...

We did the same thing and now have two plots hence the forum now Plot 28 A&B ! best thing we did. We now have one dedicated to fruit and one dedicated to veg. Onc eyou have the fruit one set up it's just maintenace, weeding and pruning.....and eating the lovely fruit!!!

Bought some more seeds, some sprout seedlings and potted them into larger pots, and, so excited, 'collected 8 bags of well rotted manure' from stable up the road. My runners and courgettes are gonna thank me.

Pulled up a bed of leeks that are on the verge of going to seed. Heeled most of them onto a clump and and took afew home along with more rhubarb.
Weeded the same bed which was full of lush weeds. Luckily very few were perennial weeds so just dug them in as green manure. Dug half the bed over until I got sick!

Watered my module sown seetcorn which are just breaking the surface.

Thanks for the encouragement, plot28A&B!! I have everything crossed that they will say yes because of course now I've written the letter, in my mind it's a fait accompli. Knowing our local council I won't get a reply for 6 months! I would hope to go down a similar route to you and plant lots of fruit trees, especially cooking apples. I'd also love to fan train a couple of fruit trees on the plot's rather handy seven foot mesh fence... but I had better stop planning or I could be in for a big disappointment!

Got rid of stuff that has not grown - it's had a long chance and plenty of tlc. No cucamelons, lemon balm, or creeping thyme this year

Lemon balm?.. That's the biggest weed ever spreads like theres no tomorrow!

Sowed my courgettes and some French beans. On a bit of a go slow lately....

Dug out some broad bean shoots that were killed by the frost and replaced them with peas whilst the beans in the greenhouse break through, was worth a try but the frost hit JUST a bit early and unexpected and didn't get time to cover them up, just wasn't expecting the frost that came after the blazing sun q couple of week ago

Just planted 80 tomato plants out in the garden they have been outside for 2 weeks now and seem fine with the weather, then planted a few peppermint and applemint plants into the ground in the hope it spreads everywere and fights back some of the other weeds,then pruned a few trees that were over shadowing the grape vines , now its off to the shops

Spent a couple of hours in the greenhouse this morning potting some chillies,cauli's,cabbages and tomatoes. I've grown way two many again. Got to pot some calabrese up later and also cut the front lawn.

A cornucopia of caulis!

Weeded my 'cornucopia of cauliflowers' in the polytunnel. Did you know that the collective noun for slugs is ALSO a 'cornucopia of slugs'..... seems very appropriate.

But it's raining and cold here for the third day running and I can't get out on the 'real' garden where everything is too soggy. I have melons glaciating in the greenhouse, tomatoes trembling in the tunnel, and peppers palpitating in the frames. What happened to spring?

Spent a little while earthing up my potatoes yet again. Then sorted out fleece, plastic covers etc ready for Fridays frost. All my seedlings are on the hardening up bench outside, and all looking good so far. Tomatoes, squash, more peas, sweetcorn, all have to be ready to go out by mid May - holidays 😄
