  • I drove back from Somerset to brum after a weekend away, unpacked the car put a load of washing on then drove straight to lottie. I was suffering severe withdrawal symptoms.

Once there I picked 4 French beans, my first of the season, I only picked them cos they are dwarf and the beans were touching the ground, I was worried about the slugs getting them. Picked another courgette that's 4 so far. Dug up another potato plant, second early. I'll eat them tomorrow for tea. The tiny ones I've put in a curry with my courgettes, beans, a couple of onions and some broadies my neighbour gave me.

I feel like I've not done them justice by making a veg curry but I need some lunch for work tomorrow.

I was thinking the same this afternoon, obviously not about your garden, as I can't see it. :-)

Only went out to the recycling bin, then sowed some lettuce and more spring onions. No wonder my ironing is piling up!

        • Yesterday made it down to the plot for a few hours- my car broke down a week ago, so I've not been able to get down so easy, as it's a 20 minute walk.

Finally got the hazel stump out I've been working away at for ages, and had another go at the new half of the plot. It's getting there, slowly, and at least now that tree's out there's space for a few more beds. I just need to get the strimmer back down there now to cut the grass, as I'd just brought it home before the car broke, after some ratbag "borrowed" it from my shed.

Sowed some ancient white clover seeds in last year's brassica bed, and some more turnips and picked the last of the gooseberries.

I was going to try spend a full day down there today, as I'm off, but forgot to check the forecast was still OK. The rain sort of put a stop to that plan.

Had a jam session at home instead, with half the goosegogs. Unusually for me, it appears to have set like jam, rather than my normal cement. I'm not sure what to do with the rest- I don't have masses, maybe 500g or so, so maybe just a crumble. It's the first lot I've had from the plant though, and pretty well the first gooseberries I've had since I was a kid, so I'm happy.

          Hopefully tomorrow will be drier!

            • I pulled up all my remaining BB yesterday also, large carrier bag full, just 'shelled' them, and popped in freezer. They weren't going to grow anymore, and had rust, and I need the space for winter veg, but can't prepare the ground till it rains.

              • Went round the outer perimeter of the plot with a hoe, now I can see where the beds start & finish..........

                • I planted out my "spare" runner beans and french beans. They've been far too long in the pots but who knows, they may still produce. In fact the french beans have already set a few pods. Of course I'm already growing enough, which is why they are spares, so I may well end up giving away anything I can harvest from them!

                  • Filled up the water butts with hose pipe. While waiting for these to fill, sowed a few salad seeds, kohl rabi, fennel.

                    • Watered, so I bet it pours down later. Weeded round the wigwam where (at last) the beans are beginning to grow.

                      • I prepared my bountiful crop of black currants for the freezer.first I cut off the branches and put them in my trolley, covered them with plastic as rain was forecast. With the help of Mr BigW we got the bunches of the branches before the rain.so sat all afternoon getting the black currants ready. They are de stalked and washed.I usually use new seed trays for freezing, before bagging but had forgotten to buy them! Washed and sterilised used trays.BC now tucked up in freezer.so far nearly 10lbs and just one batch left to do,still on the bushes. Its been a very good year for my 3 bushes!
There will be lots of jam, puddings and maybe I will try BC cordial, with special occasions celebrated with a kir royale!

                        • Y/day and this morning. Weeding and watering. Still taking stuff to the tip from the back of the new plot but its now dug over and full of vegetable plants growing nicely. Only took me a month to ture it round. Working today so I drive past my plot on the way so I'll stop and open the greenhouse,

                          • What made me laugh today! My friend told me about his son's new watering system. The son has got an old cistern, which he has sandblasted. He has connected it to the main water supply and set up a delivery system to his plants.Yes you have guessed it.When he wants to water his plants he just pulls the chain! I wish I had one of those.
