today i put it a few more onion sets. I still have about 15 that I have nowhere to put. Not sure what to do with them, seems a shame to just chuck 'em. At best I could probably squeeze in another 8 I reckon.
I cannot believe how mild it is out though. It's like September weather or somethign.Comment

Got my delivery of raspberries and strawbs yesterday - and have amazed myself by having the beds already for them, therefore today was a simple task of just planting them all.
I'm going to try this forward planning more often - it makes things so much easier.
Although, I did slip on a path coming home and got covered in mud - which quickly got rid of my smugness........because you're thinking of putting the kettle on and making a pot of tea perhaps, you old weirdo. (Veggie Chicken - 25/01/18)

Decided it was time to replace the autumn bliss raspberries which were not happy in their pot - they only achieved 2ft high and no fruit this year and were clearly far too crowded. I went to the garden centre to see if they had, by any chance, a thornless gooseberry (Captivator). To my surprise they did, so I've now got that on my patio
. I hope this one lasts longer than the previous gooseberry bush I had which was completely defoliated by sawfly.
Of course, being at the garden centre I couldn't resist looking at the seeds, and came home with several packets, as well as a bag of vermiculite which I have been meaning to get for a while.
Now to sow some winter lettuce

Cleaned up and weeded the beds in the big greenhouse after lighting the woodburner first to make it 'comfortable' indoors!
Pulled some beetroot and took it home along with onions and eggs. Pruned back some achillia which was getting wayward and blocking my path. Chopped the heads off the sunflowers and fed them to the chooks for a treat.
One of the allotment holders is getting rid of half a dozen old chooks which have stopped laying so I said I would re house them (rather than they get the chop!)

Dug up the last of the spuds - picasso (cracking bakers) - and despite the gloomy prediction from Richard-three-plots-down that they would be full of slugs, they appear, on the whole, to be ok.
Took down the pea wigwams, saving a load of sweet pea pods for seed.Comment

The "Sprouts" are looking good! So a "Christmas Day" harvest is on toe!

Rained so I didn't need to water
Making the most of saying it rained, since I don't get much chance to mention it usually.
Good timing as I mulched under the apple trees, they have loads of small apples forming, but last week started dropping some of the very small ones. Figure it's heat stress.
Should go out and see if the quince trees in the paddock are going to be good this year. Last season nothing from any fruit trees.Ali

One bit of old folklore wisdom says to plant tomatoes when the soil is warm enough to sit on with bare buttocks. In surburban areas, use the back of your wrist. Jackie French
