  • An unexpected successful day.

Today was quite a successful day.

This morning I cut 30 stakes ready for the boarding round where the greenhouse is going, and raided a friends store of wooden boards for the boarding.

After lunch, popped to Wickes to buy 12 bags of Pea Shingle and found five pallets all the same size (with narrow gaps between struts) plus one double length pallet but only half the width (about 2 foot) outside another store. A quick natter to the manager who said I was more than welcome to take all the pallets and any others they have in the future, as long as they are neither blue or brown. RESULT!

So todays outcome is that I have everything ready to put the greenhouse base down tomorrow and finish that. AND I'm also well on the way to having all I need for some compost bins too.

The double length / half width pallet I'm thinking could be turned into the table top inside the greenhouse if I attach some sturdy legs and maybe put a piece of thin sheet material over the top.

Today was a fantastic day :-)

    • Lovely to get outside again after all the Christmas stuff.

Moved one of the pots of carrots near to the garage door so I can put it under cover to avoid the coming frost (going to be cold until new year now with some possibly very frosty nights). I think the forecast snow will be to the south of York.

Dug lots of cat poo (cat lives next door) out of my newly dug bit of garden and covered the offending area with fleece. Wretched animal is damaging my crocus shoots .

Took the netting off the mizuna as its breaking the leaves and does nothing to keep the slugs down. Covered as much of the bare soil as possible with fleece to keep the cat off.

Sprinkled chopped lemon peel on another part of the garden in an experiment to see if that deters the cat - they are not supposed to like citrus peel.

Rearranged the garage a bit to accomodate the pot of carrots and also to make some room for 2 large chiligrows I was given for Christmas - now just have to wait for suitable weather to test them properly.

        .
I have a similar cat problem. Pesky critters from a couple of doors up keeps pooing on the patch where I've dug the Canna's up.

It would really make a mess of the garden in the short term.... but no more cat poo :-) Happy Days :-)

Was supposed to do this on boxing day, but went to pub instead. 2 types of onion seed sowed in my xmas present(electric propagator) Bedfordshire Champion and Improved Mammoth. First time I've used an electric propagator. Looking forward to the results.

            • Planted out about 100 onion sets, that had been sitting around in seed trays for some weeks and had lots of top growth.

Bet you're thinking that VC is crazy - they're for spring planting
Yes, I am crazy but nothing ventured - and they were cheap
If they don't thrive I've lost very little and I can always plant some more in the spring

              • Did some pottering in my friend's greenhouse, trying (unsucessfully) to tidy up a bit. Came home and did some tidying up at home. Noticed that the fleece has kept the cat off the soil I covered, but the lemon rind is less effective.

Planted 2 tomato sideshoots in the propagator.

Postman delivered a Harrods catalogue. Spent the evening gazing wistfully at pictures of greenhouses and fruit cages that are far too big for my garden and cost a fortune.

                • Buried the recently deceased budgie under a gooseberry bush. Collected three barrow loads of strawy manure from one of the plotholders with hens and spread it on a 4'0" wide bed. Collected another three barow loads of fresh hoss muck and spread it on top.
Collected another 5 barow loads of hoss muck from a communal pile athe thend of the allotments and spread it on top of comfey stems and leaves I had cut down in the autumn.
Lit the woodburner in the greenhouse and defrosted the glass whilst geting warm.

                        • Reorganised another bit of the lotty, which seems to have given me quite a lot more space, though I'm not exactly sure how!

It was done by getting rid of a plastic chair and moving my bench to a different place.

This made room for a second compost bin, which I banged together from a flat pack, but there is also definitely space for a potential new fruit tree.

I'm thinking a damson. It will be the 3rd new tree I've found room for over the past few months. As there's really nothing I like better than planting fruit trees, I'm delighted.

The other two are a Stella cherry and a Morello cherry.

                          • Dug up some Autumn fruiting raspberry canes from another plotholders plot. I had scrounged these a month ago but just got round to digging them up.
Because the ground was frozen I put there roots in a large trug and put some water in.
I intend making a new bed for raspberries soon so will put them in once I've finished the framework.

                            • What I did today - 2015

Finally able to get into the garden for more than about 10 seconds without freezing. Ground is still frozen in places, its intermittently raining and getting windy, but who cares, at least I'm not feeling like a caged lion today!

Pulled out some of the dead lobelia and cut back some of the crocosmia. Dug out the bottom layer of the hotbin to make room for the above. Moved the tub of carrots back outside now the frost has gone, and harvested some potatoes and carrots for tea.

                              • Went to the new field which looks good now its been topped.

Now to rework the orchard & allotment plan now I can see the contours better.

Very excited! Hoping to start planting next week.
