  • Busy, busy day yesterday.....took advantage of OH being at the footie!!

Planted runner beans, sowed kale, another row of beetroot, more salad leaves and spring onions. Also sowed the freebie courgettes from the magazine. Not grown them before so fingers crossed! Lots and lots of weeding done and mowed the lawn!
If it comes from a plant, eat it. If it was made in a plant, don't!!

    • Did lots of little jobs yesterday whilst OH constructed some chicken wire 'cloche type' devices to go over the pea shoots to stop the pigeons getting them. He made two and has four more to make - the design keeps changing because he's not satisfied with it. The chicken wire is a recent purchase and doesn't seem as 'bendy' as it did when I was a child. It keeps springing back to the roll shape.

Anyway while OH was designing and constructing I sowed:

Lettuce - Little Gem and Lollo Rosso (I also put out some young lettuce plants but that may have been a mistake as it is very windy here today)
      Mizuma
A few seeds of Pak Choi (it was too successful last year and ended up putting loads on the compost heap)
      Spring onions
Radish - Red Top and Sparkler
      Curly parsley
      Swiss Chard

I also weeded round the Alpine Strawberries and transplanted the runners into a fish box (as a raised bed).

We both dug another row in the large bed we are working on (got a wheelbarrow and box full of perennial roots from the one row ). This is going to be a long job.

      • Planted the last of my spuds (Duke of York). Planted out six cabbage plants and constructed a mesh frame around them. Planted out a tray full pf Golden Bear onions. Acepted a couple of courgette plants feom a fellow allotmenteer only to find that after giving up on them, some of mine have eventually broken the surface of the compost.
        Planted out my broad beans.

          • Planted out carrots next to lavender and Rosemary in pea bed, from pots.
Weeded generally and clipped box topiary balls.
Dug out dead camellia to use pot for something else
Edge lawn with half moon tool.
Pruned dead wood off of roses.
            Gathered more lilacs.
Sowed more Snapdragon, Hollyhock seeds in pots used for carrots and recycled pud tubs.
Used info from 'Square Foot Gardening' to be brave enough to sow carrots in smaller space than usual between lavender and rosemary.. let's see how it goes!...

Tried and Tested...but the results are inconclusive

                • Pricked out over 150 lanky tomato seedlings into root trainers and loo roll innards.

Next year I am going to only sow a few seeds. Yer, right...

                  • Fed the tomatoes and gave them some support, they really will have to come out of the stayput next week at the latest, so prayed for some good weather. Blowing a gale here today and cold despite the sunshine.

                      • Cleared the lawn so the OH could mow it for me.
Started on my sweet corn bed, was digging trenches ready for wet cardboard and compost when young grandaughter arrived. She was keen to help me this week and was invaluable.
Got all 24 plants in, including the poor one that I had to splint as I stepped on it when treading it in. Hana thought that was hilarious. We'll see, it may work as part of it was still attached. After all, as I pointed out, I used to be in the Red Cross and have applied splints before.
Dad picked her and her brother up at 5pm and as they were leaving he said "Haven't you forgotten something?"
We all looked blank thinking they had left something behind and he started saying, "Scones Hana, you said you would make scones today!" Apparently last week's were a great success. They were out of luck today though as I wanted to garden and so did she.

                        • Gale force winds and heavy rain here today Ah well, at the least the potatoes are getting a watering

Went to a local garden event / sale thing and came home with seven small trees and bushes. They are tucked away in a corner out of the wind ready for us to put them in the ground. We want to be able to stand and contemplate (and imagine what they'll look like in five years time) rather than have to stand in battering wind and rain as we put them in

                          • Met up with VC - had a fab day with a wonderful lady - swapped tomatoes for sale bargains at Malvern, Morrisons buckets and turmeric roots to pot up. Fabulous weather - face feels sunburned

                            • Yesterday- digging, digging and yet more digging, hoops installed, netting over one lot of hoops. Sunburn.

Today- planted out some minipop sweetcorn -sad looking things too, but it was either let them take their chances outside or let the cat get to them. They looked utterly pathetic in the ground. All my swift have died... I really do not have sweetcorn growing skillz, they all died last year too. Took some tarps up to find it has had naff all effect on the weeds- ho hum- but there was a colony of frogs living underneath. Hopefully they will hop it to somewhere safer. Sowed some carrots. Scattered slug pellets. Oh and fell over my own feet and wrenched back, ankle and both wrists, not to mention getting covered in manure and putting one hand down on something rather pointy and prickly! *pout*

Oh, my allotment is in a sorry state. Overgrown, weedy... Oh well!

                              • Went out this morning just to shove in the thyme and lemon thyme plants I bought yesterday as it was grey and windy, and ended up pulling out a whole bucketful of weeds. I found another stepping stone - had no idea it was there until I realised the weeds were coming out nice and easily in one solid mat! And I discovered what kind of roots salad burnet has.

Also went to the garden centre to exchange a defective watering can rose, but the sales clerk tried another one and it had the same problem. I managed to get out without any seed packets, astonishingly, but some lovely sturdy little stock plants followed me home.

I'd have liked to do more in the garden today but it's been blowing a gale and raining to boot. Sigh. Oh, yes, I did pot up some chilli seeds and shove 'em in the heated propagator. I know it's late, but I had to have a go. Maybe I can overwinter them indoors.
                                March is the new winter.
