  • today we dug, levelled and rotavated my veggie plot which is approx 15ft by 15ft. We've created a raised bed at one end and concreted down one side of the greenhouse so we have somewhere solid to put pots out to harden off.

Veggie plot is almost ready just needs alittle more digging over then its ready to plant once my subscription plug plants arrive! We cut the grass as well.

    • Earthed up tatties, and chucked some lawn clippings and straw over them as well ....Planted out three types of peas behind a fleece curtain .....planted clumps of leeks in a temporary position ....planted out some cabbage and weeded round my turnips.......planted marigolds down the middle of the 'sparagus bed cos OH carefully weeded out the first lot .......collected stones and added them to my pond pebble beach .....planted a fuschia in the pretty bit ......ran out of time so went home , cooked dinner and watered as and where ......

      • - pulled out lots of flowering weeds: grass, dandelions, groundsel and dead nettle mostly
        - sprinkled several bags of coffee grinds on the back lawn to cover the new grass seed
        - chopped up the green manures (alfalfa, phacelia, crimson clover & comfrey) and left on soil as a mulch
        - planted out more French beans
        - erected chicken wire for the school mange tout which are starting to go now
        - tied in the peas, now 2' tall (while mine at the lotty have been eaten by slugs/pigeons/sparrows
        - carrots are finally showing, a month late (it's been too cold)
        - acquired large card boxes & cut them up to mulch the weedy paths at school
        - planted out a bed of Canadian Wonder (red kidney beans) at school, leaving space for corn
        - planted out more cornflowers in the Wildlife Garden
        - uncovered the remaining brassicas: flowers for the bees and as bait for the first cabbage whites (I will then put the things, eggs & caterpillars included, in the daleks to DIE DIE DIE)

        • yesterday in glorious sunshine

          finished brassica netting
          weeded and composted Strawberry bed
          mowed the lawn
used clippings to make a cosy bed around the potato haulms
          watered greenhouse plants
planted out 4 more sugarsnap peas
planted out some dwarf beans in the pub garden (waiting for trellis to be erected so we can plant peas)
potted up 35 chillies and 25 tomato plants
          staked up tomatoes
ran out of space in the house so put 2 trays of tomatoes in the greenhouse under fleece(fingers crossed)
Applied Phyto red spider mite killer to my overwinterign chillies (at £15 it better work or I will be distraught on 2 levels)
had a well deserved Ale while listening to the football...

          • No rain this weekend but not all that hot. I ran out of steam at about 8.30 last night, but over the weekend I did manage to:

Plant out about 120 leeks (musselbrough) out of modules/flower pots into permanent spaces. They are not the "pencil thickness they are supposed to be but much smaller. The potted ones were better by far: a large pot with (watered) mulitpurpose compost below then a thin layer of seed compost, then leek seeds, then a sprinkling more of seed compost seems to have done the business. Layered bamboss over the bed once leeks planted out to deter cats from cr*pp*ng in the bed and digging them up.

Planted out courgettes. They are under cloches but I will try to put a layer of fleece over tonight as well. The Tompson and Morgan Soleil appear to be poor germinators this year: 1 of six first time round and one of 3 for the second. In contrast, 100% with defender (6 of 6) and Gold Rush (3 of 3) planted at same time and same place in hot house.

Planted first lot of dwarf french beans: alegri in hot hosue. About 35 plants.

Weeding - that bit looks quite good at the moment.

Harvested some radishes. That's all the home grown harvesting until broad beans, new pots, beetroot, spring onions and lettuce come. "Borrowed" leeks and lettuce from mother's garden.

Said lettuce and beetroot looks as if it has been eaten by birds, so put fleece over. Probably a good idea to replace with enviromesh when I get a moment.

            Watered soft fruit.

Put out cornflowers, pot marigods and nastersiums - meant to plant these out but will have to do next week. Also meant to sow more carrots, beetroot, raddish, lettuce, sping onions and some turnips and to turn the compost heap too. That's next weekend sorted.

PS: and I mowed the lawn!

            • The plot is still very sticky, but I managed to plant out sweetcorn and winter squash protected by drink bottle cloches. I also netted the strawberries, planted some cabbage and kale plants and pulled some weeds. It is too wet for hoeing, the soil just sticks. I also planted some cape gooseberries (little lantern) in the cave (plastic greenhouse). I have a hot banana chilli almost ripe.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

              • Today I got another 3 rows of brassicas in the ground. A row of cauliflower, a row of sprouts and a row of calabrese. My peas are up so gave them a good watering.

                      • All I managed today was watering the squashes that are rapidly taking over the windowsills in the bedrooms. My excuse is that we had Chester (daughter's Springer) over the weekend and I had to clean up the carpets.

                        • When I arrived at the allotment there was three huge pallets propped up against the fence by the entrance.
Well methinks, I've got a good use for one of those!

Hoping they weren't anyones and were fair game, I snaffled one.

I spent the rest of the evening pulling down a raggedy old fence made of tin sheeting and fixing my new found pallet in position.

I may even go so far as getting some duck egg green colour wash and toshing it over it to preserve and tidy it up.
