      • That's worth knowing BM, thanks. I was going to Wickes tomorrow for some compost, but it might be a trip to B & Q now if the quality is that good.

Bought peas, runner beans (going back to Scarlet Emperor this year) and some pumpkin seed. Hands dirty tomorrow please.

I hope Hans Mum sees this thread as she saw it and can confirm how good it was, it just crumbled in my hands, no twigs. Best I have bought.

          • Planted my first early potatoes. Planted some horseradish thongs (thanks xxx). Planted two rhubarb crowns. Popped in some early beetroot seedlings and cloched - experimental! Picked up mate's horse poop and chucked it into my manure bin. Rhubarb (other plants) looking good - about six inch lengths...yummy! Back tomorrow for more taters, carrots and parsnips.
Planted a philadelphus at home and a Black Lace Sambucus. Potted up my new patio quince.

                • (Yesterday)

Checked through the seed modules in the potting shed - the beetroot and spinach is coming through.

Sowed some more more Sweet Peas and Tagetes in modules. Also sowed some cabbage (Golden Acre) and sage in modules and pots.

Last weekend we moved the mulch covering from where it has been standing in the old paddock area and pegged out the ground where it was ready to dig. The covering has killed back most of the perennial weeds tops. Started digging this over and clearing the roots yesterday. A slow job but the soil is nice and crumbly. Will be continuing this today if the wind dies down

The mulch mix was moved to two areas at each side of the bed I'm digging so I'm hoping this has the weed killing effect it had on the original patch.

                    • Hi All,

                      First post on this thread.

Managed to get garlic, shallots, red onion and white onion sets all planted in my raised bed yesterday. Am I too early up here in south west scotland? Should I perhaps protect them with something. I have read they are pretty hardy things but i'm not convinced!

Sowed some kale, purple sprouting broccoli, cos lettuce, brussel sprouts and cabbage in my windowsill propogator. Getting full uninterrupted use of my dads greenhouse this year so will be tranferring small seedlings to there when they are a suitable size to pot on.

I've also got peas and a selection of beans I got for a pound at poundland [no pun intended]. Am i best starting these off indoors and planting outside later when they are suitable size.

Final question is potatoes? I've aquired a load of early and late seed potatoes from a local farmer and was wondering when I should be putting these in the ground. Im desperate to get them in but dont want them to fail.

                      Hope your all well.

                      Ross

                      • Sown marigolds and summer fruit poppies into modules. Went to the lotment, watered baby cabbages. Sown parsnips and turnips. Danced whilst digging sand into the carrot quadrant.

                        • Made it down to the allotment today, after being housebound from sciatica/surgery for the past 6 weeks. It's not in quite as bad a state as I feared, but most of the broadies had died, having got far too big before the single bad frosty spell. Planted more beans, parsnip seed, and some early pea plants I'd been growing on the windowsill. Also finally got around to planting the strawberry plants that had been heeled in in a tub out the back garden, being dug up by the local squirrel every few days. Hopefully most will survive, but three are almost certainly past it.

The I panicked a bit, as all the January digging I did is starting to grass over, and I'm not allowed to do anything more than mess about with a trowel a little for the next month- and they're going to be in a right state by then; but it was too nice a day to waste time getting stressed, so I just spend half an hour lying on the grass watching buzzards instead.

Apparently we have a tea-leaf aquiring anything that isn't nailed down from my corner of the site (a neighbour had a load of fence posts and wood-ash, both minimal value, but wanted, removed yesterday- he has a plot almost invisible under a tree, it has to be someone on site!) and my horrible neighbour has been carting soil off my plot again in my absence. I haven't seen her since June, but others have seen her at it, and assumed she had my permission. There was clods of earth dumped over my flower/herb border as well.

Ah well. Now going to go plant some new leek seeds, having brought one of the overwintered ones back to remind me!

                          • Finally got some alone time and decided to try growing some turmeric. Got some roots from Chinatown and they're sitting under plastic on the windowsill. Apparently the leaves can be used for flavouring too, so even if the roots don't take off it won't be a total loss.

Psyching myself up for 'building' my raised beds tomorrow. It will take about two weeks, I'm thinking, since I'll have to hike back and forth from the shop with compost; I shall either end up much fitter or incapacitated, it's a toss up.

                            • Went down to lottie @ 0730 this moring, uncovered tattie bed, hoed, raked and planted my tatties a foot deep so fingers crossed......some had gone mushy so they went in the compost bin. Took the shelf down in gh before it fell down..........built another one for the other side of gh. The are just laid on the gh borders with trays of seedlings until roof fixings arrive. Had a natter to HM. Went home to watch footy. After getting over the shock of seeing Leeds actually score I went back down for a hour. Sowed some ***snips & carrots into half barrels. Put some sweetcorn & cucumber into modules that had germinated on kitchen paper. Had a cuppa then came home.

                              • At the plot this afternoon I emptied one of my darlek compost bins and mulched my currents, gooseberries and blueberries. I then transferred the contents of another bin across so it was well turned. I didn't do the other 2 though, it was a bit harder work than I thought.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
