Hiow come, that during the winter I am always scratting arouind for wood to burn in my woodburner but come the spring/summer i always finish up knee deep in timber!

    • !st proper visit to the lottie, weeded and turned the 2 beds ready for 1st early spuds, sowed a short row of Oskar v. early peas nest to overwintering onions, cleared the debris from last years runner beans and covered the area yet to be properly cleared with black plastic ( SIL and Son WILL dig it over for me soon!) and finally cleared the area where the permanant compost bin is going. Also drank a flask of coffee and chatted to other plot holders and got sunburnt! A brilliant start.

      • Potted on 29 tomato seedlings and 11 aubergines. So much for growing only what I strictly need this year. And it's far too early of course and I don't know WHERE I'm going to put them all before the middle of May. Sigh.

Must resist planting cukes and beans till the end of April... and squashes till May...

        • Gave the lawn it's first cut of the year. Surprising how long it had got. First tomatoes (Auntie Madge) germinated in the heated propagator so they are now on the windowsill.

              • Sowed 25 Globe Artichoke (Violette di Romagna) seeds, half a packet of Calendula "Neon", and a few pinches of various lettuces into pots. Checked nursery greenhouse - a comfy 55 degrees - everyone looking perky and happy so far...
Dumped six feed bagfuls of WRFM onto my 2nd tattie bed and spread it about. Riddled out all the pots of spent compost from last years tomatoes, chillies and aubergines. Mowed me meadow. Planted out King Edwards in 2nd tattie bed by just sitting them on top of the spread manure then covering them each with a generous heap of riddled spent compost followed by a quilt of grass cuttings. Remembered to light paraffin heater in nursery. Pooped!!

                  • Dumped five bags of woodchippings on my allotment paths. Planted out half a trayful of leeks that i set away from grass in October. Watered dibbled holes after planting. Took some chrysanth cuttings in greenhouse and put some plastic opaque tupperware over the 6" pot they were planted into to keep them moist.

                    • I checked up on the sowings in the GH - so far only chard seedlings have germinated with no sightings yet of nasturtiums, (supermarket ramiro) peppers, courgettes or lettuce. Indoors my tomato seedlings are doing fine. Outdoors all my broad beans are poking through the soil and a couple were planted closer together than I realised, so I took a risk and transplanted those.

                              • Sowed beetroot, kale, leeks, spring onion in GH

Potted on tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, chillies - yet again sowed far too many as I thought they wouldn't all germinate. They did.

Planted out shallots, broad beans, peas, first early potatoes
