  • - took (and hopefully passed) my 6 hour Level 2 Food Safety exam (mostly about bacteria & cleanliness)
    - dug out a trench of soil for my spuds: replaced soil with leafmould, put soil on brassica bed
    - got Anya & Marabel & Rooster spuds in
    - weeded a bit, not much though because the mulch is doing a brilliant job

    • Sowed gherkins (again),tomato Beefsteak,Bernier Rose,Cherry Fox,Gardeners Delight,Matina,,Yellow Perfection & Zuckertraube. Already have Cedrico seedlings.
Sowed Early Jalapeno chilli's and Rosso Guardia Cielo. These are small plants with upward facing chilli's. Because they are small they will be ideal for a shelf along the greenhouse wall.

Oops forgot..............I spent the latter part of the day squaring my new greenhouse up and making a start on the brickwork it will stand on. Mixing mortar and bricklaying with a garden trowel was a new experience. I have proper bricklaying gear but its at my 'project' house , 25 miles away!

      • Went down to lottie, transfered the following from trays into modules: Cos, Little Gem, Cabbage, Cauli, Sprouts, Nasturtiums. Put beetroot seedling in half loo rolls. Made a ladybird house out of old bamboo canes stuffed inside a 12" length of drainpipe. Planted out Mange Tout as they were getting too big for root trainers. Gave blueberries a mulch of coffee and pine chippings. Turned compost heap over..........that's about it, I think.

        • Bought a blueberry and a blackberry from B&Q, gave them a water and feed but more interestingly, discovered a handy way of carrying plants - in those free fabricky wine bags that you get at Tesco's. Found it in my bag when I was worrying over how to carry the fruit plants from the shop, and those pots slotted into a wine bottle slot each and stayed put and stable all the hike home

          • Bought a cheap and nasty coldframe from Lidl because Mr VVG hasn't mended my two thick timber ones yet! Put my pea seedlings in to harden off at night time now. Pricked out all my brassicas into pots. I plant them late, owing to a combination of occupied beds and club root prevention.
Cleaned out chook house and fed the roses.

            • wasted five hours of my life at work waiting for the phone to ring .....yeah I know I get paid for it but I would've rather been planting spuds or digging or sorting seedlings or anything .........

              • Between my work being busy, OH's work taking him overseas (and more often than scheduled) and the littl'un needing more attention than previously, I haven't done much by way of actual growing things, ot even prepping the land this year.

But I did get out and water the few seedlings I have this evening - the broad beans are making progress and can be put out whenever their space is ready, the spinach is up, a couple of cauliflowers are up, and the first pot of leeks is showing spikes. The radishes and spring onions in the window box on the toilet window are green - I might have sown too thickly. The first sowing of peas against the fence is just over ground. And the rhubarb crown from the plot now in the back garden is settling in nicely.

But I also made a bit of thinking time too. I need to get my head around what is feasible or not this summer - I should have 5-6 weeks off, but I need to do a LOT of clearing on the plot to get anything growing for then.

                • Checked in on my little veg-babies and potted on a couple of peppers, also brought a pepper back in from the greenhouse as it doesn't seem warm enough in there at the moment. Still looks healthy enough but doesn't seem to be getting bigger, so now three peppers are sharing the kitchen windowsill with four chillies.

                  • Actually managed to get to the allotment for a couple of hours. Weeded the asparagus bed and the overwintering onions. Picked the first couple of PSB shoots, and some curly kale. Day before yesterday gave the lawn it's first cut of the year.

                    • Bought another blueberry, this time from Aldi, and I've decided I'm going to stop googling about gardening for a bit or else my brain is going to explode from confusion and annoyance.

Case in point, pine needles and cones are supposed to help blueberries, aid acid soil, and yet just read that's an urban myth. And why perlite instead of vermiculite and vice versa? How much vinegar in how much water to make tap water ok for plants? And does leaving warm water to settle overnight actually make the water more palatable for plants?...

And it goes on. I'm exhausted. So, I'm going back to simply pottering about for a bit, enjoy my gardening, before my 'enthusiasm' commits suicide due to stress.

                      • I dug up some raspberry roots that I'd missed last year, which have now begun to shoot. Potted up 7 new plants (Glen Ample). I'm not sure if all the ones I moved to the plot last year took, so I've now got some replacements. Any that are still left will just be paved over for the chook run.
In the greenhouse I planted some french beans to grow undercover until the tomatoes need more space, and also pricked out said tomato plants. I've got an 8 by 6 greenhouse and I potted 44 plants today, with more varieties still in the propagator. I think I might do a boot fair soon .

I also potted up more chilli plants. I can't even hazard a guess at how many of those I've got! Even to grow one of each variety would give me 42, and of course I always plant 3-6, in case they don't all germinate.

The greenhouse is bursting already, even though the onions, broad beans and various brassicas have been outside hardening off for several weeks now. They've even graduated to stopping out all night

I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Forked and raked a bed over for sowing lots of spinach

                            • Day off work today. Brilliant weather and even managed to work without my shirt for a couple of hours. Finished cementing the 'set up' bricks for the greenhouse. Stayed at lottie all day and managed to get it fully glazed.
Just need to get some glass cleaner on it now as its manky.

                              • Got six more strawberry plants (16 in total now - must stop buying before I end up having to sneakily use the neighbours unloved garden) and a redcurrant bush.

                                Watered everything.

Got really excited when I saw that the barren-looking bucket of yesterday is now a bucket with seven parsnip shoots in it.
