  • I weeded around the fruit trees (mainly grass and chickweed so bought it home for my guinea pigs) and moved 14 strawberry runners from the existing bed to around the fruit trees and white currants. I did remove all runners last Aug, but with the mild weather, they threw new ones.
I also planted two squares of dwarf peas (they are supposed to support themselves, hmm we'll see). I also picked the remainder of my brussel sprouts, but left the plants in for when I get my chickens next week.
I also counted my chilli plants (106) and tomatoes (60). I need a serious re-homing strategy!
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

    • Mowed all our lawns and orchard, lane and next door's too. Taken three hours and I am pooped. Sowed more cucumbers and gherkins, plus sweetcorn. Now watch it snow!

      • Sowed golden purslane and land cress. Hoping I can transfer them to the base of my berries to act as some living, tasty mulch.

Potted up what I hope is a cape gooseberry and a mystery one that unfortunately looks to be grass, but you never know.

Got some shop lemongrass in a glass of water.

        • Planted some potatoes that are either Rocket or Charlotte - don't know which as I saved them from last year's crop - Rocket I think! Also 3 Swift in a tub in the greenhouse.
Transplanted cabbage, kale and collard seedlings from modules into individual ones. Sowed mixed lettuce in greenhouse. Also a few experimental courgette, marrow, cucumber and pumpkin seeds ( with profuse apologies to the man in the moon but at least the potatoes were on the right day).

            • Continued with my tidy up theme. Cut down old JA and burnt in woodburner. Weeded two beds ready for planting. Applied another 7 bags of woodchippings to paths. Was surprised to find that giving glorious weather there was no one else at allotments either early evening last night or the night before..............their loss!!!!!!!!!

              • Got some 11cm drain pipe and made the worm tower as suggested on the New Shoots forum. Popped into the stables on the way home and picked up a lunchbox full of well rotted manure and hay for bedding for the worms. Stopped at the FiL on the way home and pinched some compost worms from him as our veg plot is surrounded on 4 sides by concrete so there is a lack of worms in the soil. Will start feeding them in a couple of days.

Bren how long did your beetroot seedlings take before you could plant them out?

                    • Yesterday bought a second 250L water butt, expensive at £80 but looks very good.
The present one is now almost empty.
Last night watered the seedling in the greenhouse, and the cherry tree.
Moved 30ish seedlings from the garden to home for the night.

This morning moved seedlings out before cycling to work.
Looking forward to installing the new water butt, together with my daughter (2yr old, she does not help much but I love her) over the weekend.

                      • Just called the council to see what's happening with my application several months old.
They say I'm second on the list and they'll have a review next month.
                        Exciting!

                          • Compost and mulch arrived so spent about four hours building my raised bed, with only a quarter-filled bed to show for it! Still, feeling plenty satisfied. Rigged up a make-shift self-watering thingy under it, using cut up plastic milk containers and junk and mulch sheet, and thinner plastic bottles of tonic water cut up and linked as the waterfeed pipe, and it seems to be working. So far.

The bags of stuff are too heavy to move from my hallway, so I used a flower bucket to load up on compost there, brought it to the lounge to mix it with vermiculite (pretty like fool's gold chippings), perlite (you're right, Bexy, so dusty!) and water gel crystals, and then took it out to the balcony bed.

                            Hopefully finish up tomorrow.

                            • Finally got round to sowing my parsnips direct. Just to be different I made three drills in concentric circles (like a target) the biggest being three foot then two foot then one. Watered soil, scraped the drills out with the end of a cane, sowed the seed, covered sown seed with potting compost, watered again then added a fine covering of sand to show me where the drills were. Edged the circle with paviors.

Dug up a few of last years spuds which are just starting to shoot. They'll be ok with some leeks I dug up yesterday...............leek and tattie soup anyone!

I hadn't bought any early seed potatoes so put some of the Duke of York freebies in the greenhouse to harden up a bit before planting!

                                I want parsnip targets too.
