What I did today 2012-2014

Showed friends around the allotment - when we looked online they have about 70 plots to choose between! It was bloody cold, so we had a cup of tea and a walk around the allotments, then went home to reserve them a plot

I cored out the stations for my show parsnips and then mixed up me compost and filled the holes. Got soaked but job is done ready to sow. Bit late but my earliest show is September this year so should be fine for then. Also shredded 1000 ltres of peat so am right weary.

After buying another bag of compost, I replanted the Marrow and Pumpkin plants in bigger pots in the front porch. Again, looking at mini greenhouses in shops and then thinking…..whyyyyyyyyyy? When you’re not already making most of the porch space which is a natural greenhouse anyway? Sowed Hollyhocks, cornflowers, broccoli in small pots and left over seed trays and put them all together in the Little red wagon, I had left over from VW days in the front porch.
Really hope the broccoli does well, as I eat so much of this, it would pay off the most!
Pruned/snapped off old raspberry canes easily and then cut back trailing something that was growing entwined in a small evergreen tree next to the canes.
Should have pruned the new re growing raspberry canes by now but they all have new sprouting leaves and seem healthy enough.
Added recycled cardboard, newspaper to compost bin.
Also sowed some Cornflower, Hollyhocks and Candytuft directly to the first two beds.
De headed Primroses and put back outside. Readjusted some of the onions that the birds had obviously de lodged a little, but none missing.

Heavy frost this morning, hot sun this afternoon. Madness!!

No, just normal April weather

- finished digging out my overwintered carrots
- cut alfalfa & phacelia as a mulch straight onto the beds
- planted a double row of peas
- started hardening off the first of this year's cabbages & cornflowers
- planted the chitted sweetcorn seed into modules: germination good this year
- ditto French beans: germination not so good, which is why I chit
- made up another 5l bottle of seaweed feed
- used the first slosh on the tomato seedlings
- got a puppy: started composting her poops

Potted on sprouts and kale into modules and put in the cold frame - time they toughened up! Apologised profusely to the babies in the nursery for not lighting the paraffin heater last night (it would have to be the coldest night we've had in ages, wouldn't it!). They seemed none the worse for their chilly night and I've made sure they've got heat tonight.
Brought home a load of stuff to replenish my "For Sale" table. Things are going well and so far writing, "Thank You for Your Honesty" on the money box has paid off, with all the books balancing. At this rate I'll have the lottie rent for next year in no time!
Rearranged to unheated greenhouse to accommodate stuff I want to put out soon.
Hoovered three tons of beach sand and dog hair from out of the back of the car and put it in my home composter. Waste not want not!

Finished tidying up the strawberry patch, moving runners and weeding. Planted some onion sets between the rows.
Started weeding the autumn fruiting raspberries ready for mulching. There is some bark chippings left over from the community garden so I'm thinking I might buy some of those to go round them.The committee wants £1 per barrow full, whihc is probably a bargain.

Took the opportunity to tidy up the run that had been vacated by my cockerels. Cleaned out and moved the belfast sink to an area near the edge of the run that I intend running a gutter off the roof to to keep it topped up with water.
Broke up an old broody hut that i had within the run to make a bit more room.
Transported my LS cockerel and five laydees into their new area.

Dumped 6 bags of woodchippings and spread a couple of them on paths.
Planted out some shallots that I had grown on in trays.

Planted memorial rose for my beloved bunny with ashes scattered beneath.
Planted rosemary and thyme as well (her faves) - will get munched by other bunnies.
Re-planted the mini-lavenders and heleniums which had come up to make way for the rose.
Did a lot of hand-weeding, and come across a few things that I am not sure if they were from last year's flower sowings or if they are weeds.....but also some self-seeded borage and nasturtiums.

Re-potted my houseplants (one of which had so many roots it looked like it could of slithered off on its own!).
Planted up pumpkin, courgettes, dwarf beans, tomatoes, fennel and chervil in pots. Transferred some herbs (chives, parsley, oregano, basil (red and green) and sage) into a nice oval planter. Took the lid off my flowery propagator when I discovered the marigolds looked all sad, droopy and moist!
Oh, and despaired of the cats who had progressed from eating the nice trough of grass I planted for them to sitting in it and peeing!!

sowed cornflower in a newly cleared flower bed.

Potted on the potimarron squash and planted some more indoor cucumbers (I was too ambitious putting them out in the unheated greenhouse and they succumbed to the cold).

Just taken delivery of 3 tonnes of top soil to 'top up' the smaller of the raised beds and 30M2 of turf to re do the garden which the chickens enjoyed over the last few months

They are now back in there side of the plot and my veg and garden should now be mine again.

My back is already sore and I have not even started!

Haha - I read the first page of this thread and thought TG I didn't read this first - because you're all too energetic and organised for me! But the cat's pee'ing in the planter box.....yes, I can stay; I'm scared to bring the herbs inside for winter in case they look like kitty litter to some.

Beds now weeded (nettles!) and top soil down, knackered... think the turf might need to wait until tomorrow.

Swapped some eggs for some just cooked pancakes, heaven! Just what I needed.
