  • Checked everything because we finally got a frost last night after two weeks of frost threats. Everything looks good, including the uncovered tomatoes in the unheated greenhouse...phew!

Actually, it looks like I did manage to decimate a tray of mustard because I forgot to put the lid back on and the kitchen-towel dried out. I've given it water anyway, it might just recover, but I won't be holding my breath.

Scattered a load of my deciduous leaves all over the greenhouse floor with the aim of drying them out so I can crumble them and earth up the spuds.
Tried and Tested...but the results are inconclusive

    • Planted three rows of Kestrel potatoes. Just dug down deeply with a trowel and dropped a spud in each hole.
Sowed a tray full of Marian swedes and a trayful of Ruby swedes. These are to go with my Best Of All swedes which I've just put out to harden off.
Doing my own swede trial so I'll see which one is truly 'Best of all'!

Soed some F1 Hispi cabbage in a 6" pot.

Potted up 8 Beafsteak tomatoes and 7 indeterminates from a mixed bag of seed. Thwese will go with my dozen or so Cedrico which appear to be growing very slowly (temp?)
I have 7 Jalapeno and 7 skyrocket chilli plants which are also at a standstill, waiting for the warm weather.

Put out sprouts, cabbage, Calabrese and swede plants to harden off.

Put out garlic that i have growing in large pots to benefit from the rsin and harden off a bit hopefully.

      • Very April weather today... sun .... showers... sun...hailstones??? ... more sun....

        Anyway...
managed to scarify one area of lawn

then inside to to pot on some tomatoes

back outside to sow a row of lettuce direct to soil

then inside to sow a few sweet peas in pots

back outside to plant out some strawberry runners potted on from last year

back inside to pot on some lupins

        back outside...still raining....

back inside... bought a sheet of 100 first class and a sheet of 100 second class stamps from the online post office shop (Must admit, f'n annoyed by Royal Mail on this.... not so much that they have increased prices by such a huge percentage [now that the increase restriction has been lifted] but it is the sheer hypocrisy that they are now restricting supplies to retail outlets to stop them profitering. Come on...who do you think you are kidding!!!!

Have to say peeps, if you post a lot of stuff, whilst not encouraging you to panic buy, it might be worth your while stocking up a bit now before the price increase at the end of the month

(PS if you buy sheets rather than booklets you don't have to pay P&P)

back outside..... nah... had enough for today, early tea before footy on the telly

        • Spent a whole hour and a half doing nothing else except moving compost/manure from one of the compost bins and spreading it on a section of the plot. Wish I had more energy - I am whacked!
Oh - I did water all the plants in the glass shed as well.

            • Planted some spuds (Rocket, I think?) fairly deeply so they're not affected by any frost, dug some more bed for the rest of the spuds, weeded all the onion beds, cut down loads of brambles and put down some weed membrane... Kids finished painting the shed - looks good Screwed a metal shelf unit to the wall in the shed, and failed to get my awesome, but not so powerful, drill to put a drill through a 3 inch piece of wood - bench will have to wait until I can get some drill bits up there with me. Had lunch (soup with a nice roll of bread), washed up, weeded some more, then went home! Oh and the nice single bloke was up there too - he strimmed the edges of the plot for me
Great day, and hopefully better weather tomorrow for some more! I'll need to go back to work for a rest - my body is aching now LOL

                      • Potted in a tray or two of nasturtiums. Moved 30,000 tomato plants back indoors...OK major exaggeration but feels like that many. Too cold to do more!

                          • Planted out kale with some coriander as a companion. Sowed parsnips (yay) with radishes inbetween the rows. Cleared out the gone-to-seed cabbages and planted out AYR cauli, red cabbage and wheeler's imperial cabbage, enviromeshed the beds. Potted on more cauli and cabbage. Sowed some sweet peas, hoping I'm not too late. Oh and needless to say, took the day off work!

                            • Yesterday - Mowed the Paddock and used the clippings to "earth up the newly emerging potato leaves (yay!). Just as well as it was distinctly chilly last night and I think they would have suffered.
Today - Potted up some Autumn Green Broccoli, Evesham Special Sprouts, Offenham 2 Cabbage and Perpetual Spinach. Kept six of each for myself and the rest went into modules for putting on the "For Sale" table.
Potted on some tomato plants from the polystyrene cups I'd put them in. Don't know why, but the ones in the cups are definitely not doing as well as the ones in regular three inch pots.- Had not made much growth at all. Will be interesting to see if they improve now.
Did a bit of plant shuffling between greenhouses - some babies have moved up from the nursery greenhouse to the "junior" greenhouse, while some juniors have now graduated to the cold frame in preparation for going out.
Planted out some perpetual spinach and a couple of Balloon Romaine Lettuce.

                              • Went up to the allotment and started building a bench inside, then got bored and raked over the spud bed. When done, did some more on the bench, then let a friend in to take two chairs off me. Had a cuppa and a chat with him, then let him back out, and built more bench. Planted spuds, then finished off the bench (can you tell I'm a butterfly?). Dug an existing bed over and it's riddled with weed roots - really fine ones. Can't get them all out so going to dig it over every time I go up there for a while and hopefully kill it off that way.
Picked some PSB, tidied up the shed, then went home. Had roast chicken with potato and PSB for tea. Yum!
