  • Today I tried some asparagus given to me by a friend. These are the sweetest and most tender asparagus I have ever tasted. It is a variety called Larac - an old French variety. I spent about an hour on the net trying to find seeds/crowns.plants in pots - but nothing. Plenty of recognition that Larac is one of the best. Does ANYBODY know where I can find some????
To have expectations is to invite disappointment. View each moment with clear eyes and see the gift that is given to you.

    • Far too little done yesterday...but mainly because I went to Point to Point races to see our horse running..he finished second and probably should have won, but anyways...

Planted some Red Onion sets - Karmen
Potted on some tomatoes and a courgette plant.
Sowed some more Courgettes (round ones), some Marrow, some Sweet Peppers and some pickling Cukes....
Noted that my Korean mint has started to germinate but the ordinary still hiding..(likewise my parsley and basil sowings are still not up..)
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

      ...utterly nutterly

Couldn't find any suppliers, but found this article which suggests that established asparagus crowns can be divided. http://www.uaex.edu/Other_Areas/publ...f/FSA-6002.pdf Maybe ask your friend if he/she is prepared to donate you a crown?

        • Doubt Im going to get much done at all today, been raining all day long. I did manage to persuade a car driving relative to bring me some compost round so I now have 8 ginormous bags in my dining room (and can dig over and fill the 3ft x 6ft beds!). Also popped to Homebase and bought some more strawberry plants......and a trailing fuchsia, just coz it was pretty!

          • Dodged the 1/2" white 'bullets' being relentlessy fired at me from above. Made it to the greenhouse where I re-sowed the leeks that o/h dropped and ruined (managed to save 15!). Confined to GH so tried to re-organise what I re-organised when I was confined to GH yesterday when it rained. Missiles left off long enough to make it back to the house in one piece. Now pondering whether it should be tea or alcohol while I watch yet more tears from god and the angels swamping my garden. Anyone any clue when this will stop and things might actually start growing

            • Potted on the tomatoes (at last). Went to the lottie and collected some more PSB and the first of the asparagus. Made a start on hacking back (sorry, pruning) the forsythia which is trying to take over the world and shading the greenhouse.

              • Chased allotment neighbours hens from plot....twice! Put up some makeshift wire netting to deter them.

Planted out five Trafalgar F1 brussel sprout plants and built a temporary wire mesh cage around them.

Lit woodburner with OH's old chip pan oil and burned some more of my old wooden greenhouse.

Started piling some surplus bricks that i have on the plot in to one area.

                • lifted my fig tree out from the ground, it was in a big pot sunk into the ground, was bloody hard work

put it in a bigger pot, and and moved it to front garden against a south facing wall, hopefully more figs will ripen, the place I have put it rarely gets any frost aswell, also put my 2 new plum trees in bigger/better pots

                          • Went to the allotment after work as usual, with big intentions. lit the woodburner in the greenhouse, sat down and listened to the rain pattering off the glass. Nearly fell asleep.

All good intentions went out the window and I finished up going home after an hour or two after having only sorted the chooks.............

                            • Sowed my French climbing beans. I have lots of French dwarf ones to follow too. Not growing runner bean as we still have a draw full of them in the freezer and we only seem to want to eat the French ones.

                              • Pricked out broccoli seedlings, spaced out and put in other pots and seed trays, sowed more night scented stock in recycled ‘seed trays’, ie marg tubs and pie tins and pricked out Hollyhock seedlings into deeper pots.
