What I did today 2012-2014

What a glorious day yesterday - down to the plot quite early (before it got too hot). Planted out runner beans, climbing frenchies, sweetcorn and potimarron squash. Weeding! My late (early) potatoes are peeping through - reduced from £1 to 50p in the £1 shop because they had chitted themselves madly. Planted out a bay tree given to me by a colleague. Then we went and did the grocery - fruit and veg from market, meat from butchers. Came home, sandwich and then into the greenhouse - is was WARM in there! Put cucumbers in final position out of pots and into growbags. Potted on loads of tomatoes - finally everything is growing. Planted my hanging baskets. Took OH on a ramble for some twiggy sticks and planted out peas into the raised beds. I have put a good 'border' of coffee grounds around and over the soil around the peas to dissuade the b****y squirrels!

Down the plot again in a bit to plant out second tranche of sweetcorn, mould up the spuds a bit more and plant more radish, beetroot and carrots.

Yay! Marigolds came at last! Planted some out in beds near rosemary, carrots and lavender and some in pots so I can move them around next to vegetable crops. Spaced out and watered radishes and planted out lettuces from pots, from front porch. A little too hot in the day to spend too much time out - took Conker for a walk about 4.30 and he was hot and exhausted just from walking slowly.
Must be about 30 degrees today?

Yesterday Morning: Potted all my tomatoes up into florist buckets and watered half plot.
Yesterday Evening: Put the supports in for my four rows of peas on full plot.

This morning: Watered in the greenhouse on full plot as well as watering peas and carrots. Then went to half plot and watered tomatoes in greenhouse there as well as watering the allotment. Strimmed round plot as I cut the grass paths on Friday night.

This Afternoon taking number 1 son for a bike riding lesson, should be fun

This Evening I'll lock both greenhouses up and do a little weeding and watering on both plots.

Been sowing more stuff in pots and modules with little grandson. Takes forever, but he loves it.

Continued with other side of polytunnel, digging out and refilling with topsoil and homemade compost. Planted the grapevine. Repotted/divided more herbs, mainly mints. Watered lots again. Going to allotment about 9pm, when it's cooler as I need to get the sweetcorn in. Sowed spring onion direct, also courgettes and patty pan squash.

Went down to B&Q an bagged the summer bedding flowers on buy one get one free, made up a pretty hanging basket too. Veg has had a good watering, we have gone from one extreme to the other in the south . Trying to run down the water butt because it needs a clean out. DH has been putting all the stuff from the pond in there an now it stinks.

Planted out spaghetti squash, pumpkins and courgettes. Potted on chillies which are now all in the stayput. I have almost cleared the windowsills indoors.

planted out the last of my swedes and red torpedo onions. Did a massive amount of weeding of docks and nettles. Stupidly I had shorts on so now have tingly legs.
Moved my sitty out bench and it fell apart so did some makeshift repairs.
Bought a couple of pepper plants, a couple of sausage toms an a black tom from a local car boot sale. The only stuff in one greenhouse now is three trays of french beans. The other greenhouse has peppers,toms ,cukes and courgettes still to be planted up yet.
Let the chooks have a wander and dust bath over another area and watered all newly planted seedlings and stuff in pots and trays.
Did a bit of weeding inside one of my greenhouses until I nearly collapsed with heat exhaustion.

Down at plot at 7.00am. Planted out show celery. Scattered loads of slug pellets and put down slug clear as well. had a four hour break which I spent travelling 35 miles to repair my elderly uncle's garage roof,cut his grass, earthed up his early spuds, quick lunch, then back to plot. Planted 20 blanch leeks into greenhouse and kept better half right, sowing broad beans,globe beet and planting my left over onion sets. Threw mega gallons of water onto the plot. It is now so dry. Mega heat exhausted as well

Sowed more beets, sowed bite size carrots, potted on cabbage and cauliflower seedlings, added collars to potted on brassicas, took rocket and caca salad leaved to their new homes (two of my aunts), weeded, weeded, weeded some more, same with the watering, harvested some spring onions, harvested a small summer cabbage, planted out more beans and tidied up the shed.

This afternoon I built a small wigwam in my kitchen garden. Two of my very young cousins had pea plants that started life as a school project and no idea how to grow them on, I've decided that a wigwam at my place will be a good start to their 'gardening education'. They live across the road from me so they can visit easily, they know they need to check their plants daily to make sure they're well watered (and if they lose interest I can easily care for them).

I'm so ready for a glass of chilled white wine now!

Planted out my Black beauty courgettes, sunflowers, Thyme and Oregano.

Went to garden at half 10. Came away at half eight...
Took up three slabs out the front [very bleedin big ones], dug ground over, looks awful, full of stones, cement and root.

Planted out two rosemarys, two sage, lots of marigold, 5 Black Hollyhock [thank you seed swap!! - gave some to neighbour, she gave me some lupins], kiwi, orlaya grandiflora, amaranth, the bluebells that have been patiently waiting for a home for at least 3 years, sweet peas donated by neighbour - I gave him tagetes in return, two tiny bay twigs, chopped down the lemon balm out the front.

Out the back - took the blowaway out of greenhouse, put it back where it was last year, filled it with various seedlings and the tiny fig, and left the door open. Potted on some tomatoes, some herbs, sowed beetroot and spring onion direct, potted on some chillies, re-jigged all the seedlings.

Planted out the 12 climbing french beans, a courgette, the blanco medio courgette [cheers Zazen! ], a couple more squash, 3 artichokes, not sure if they'll survive, red orach, some callaloo, also not sure it'll live, a few sunflowers, a few tomatoes, a couple of nasturtiums, put a millefleur [?] tomato in a hanging basket.

Chopped downsome nettles and put them around the potatoes, along with the remains of the kale. Rigged up a capilliary watering system with a bucket, and an old tablecloth and a B&Q grobag holder. Hopefully the tomatoes, big bays, and assorted goodies will live over the next three days.


I'm a bit tired now, but the garden needed the sort out. Next time - re-jig furniture and do something with bits of wood everywhere....

over week I have..
cleared front garden and cut back the vicious date palm (allegedly needs fleece during winter but I can't kill the **thing!)

dug in compost and manure and lined bean trench with newspaper, put up wigwams and planted beans

Planted 5 tomato plants and cleared a raised bed for replanting ( topped up soil and dug in loads of manure.)

sown lettuce seeds, watered several times, harvested first broad beans.

replanted a gooseberry.

The last three days seem to have rolled into one so .......I have-
Planted up the lottie gh with aubs, chillies, peppers and a couple of melons .
All my celery is now out and my celeriac
Sowed more beans direct, climbing and dwarf
Planted out runners and climbing zebra beans
Planted out cucs, toms , squashes , courgettes , marigolds, sunflowers and cosmos,
netted the pond to stop my tadpoles from being eaten
near;y finished the fruit cage
strimmed and weeded
lifted cardboard on a bed to prepare for peppers and found a field of horsetail and a dead mouse
dug over and cremated horsetail and dead mouse
declared war on the asparagus beetle ........
then at home potted up toms for gh and for yard (plenty left to go in lottie)
planted out dahlias( pound shop specials) and various other annuals
watered , watered and watered again ..........

Nothing much yet. One of the dogs got out and chased around after some roo's. Don't worry they have waaaay more speed than him. Making up some potions for someone's horse. And having a quiet day with the house animals. But I couldn't miss out when I saw this was on page 666! Awesome.
