  • Wrapped pea netting around the broad beans in an attempt to give them a bit of support in this wind. (Aquadulce...approx 4.5ft tall). Most of the rest of the veg is OK being a lot lower to the ground, however the lupins, which with a very damp spring were having there best year ever, (see pic lupin and wife....wife on the right...) have taken a real battering with lots of flower spikes snapped.

    • Got up to discover the blowaway (which is very heavily weighted, and has sat there happily weathering all the wind for the last two years) was tilting alarmingly, so sorted that out so far as I could, and rescued all the plants I could find strewn over the path.

Then went to survey the lottie damage- it could be worse. Someone else's polytunnel had collapsed, but I don't know whose, nor was it obvious how to fix it, so I didn't try do anything... Rescued (hopefully) a tomato, which had completely snapped- brought the top home to the plant hospital, where it's resuscitating in some water. Hope it roots; it's my only Lemon Tree I think. Propped up anything which could be propped and looked like it needed it. Picked the first broadies while I was down there. Didn't stay long, as the rain was starting up again, but hopefully I've done enough that it shouldn't be worse tomorrow.

      • Potted on some armpits, flowering toms , chillies and peppers . Sowed some lollo rosso and romaine lettuce, wallflowers , lemon basil and turnips . Painted two gnomes. Met my mate at the lottie to inspect our plots , sit in her shed and drink coffee and have a good gossip and moan about the weather

        • After knocking two trays of frenchies off a shelf I saved what I could and sowed two more lots. My tom plants are so small and my greenhouse looks so big, that I sowd a row of little gem lettuce along the front of the toms. This will hopeully be harvestable long before the tom need the space.
Sowed an old packet of fennel in a pot along with 3 individual pots with a 'Turks turban' squash seed in each. I'd forgotten about these so sod it says I, I know its late but I may as well try them?
Note to self.................Still need to sow some mooli.

            • Went down the lottie to assess wind damage, surprisingly little, a few corn plants leaning at 45 degrees (I'll straighten them once wind dies down) and one or two runner bean tips snapped - I'm thankful we had such a wet week otherwise I'd be in the process of putting my new polytunnel up - I think I'd be looking for it across all Cardiff if I had !!!

                • Went up the allotment and put in some beans, then raced home to avoid the rain. Now watching it bounce off the patio, stopping me from planting out in the back garden.

Oh, well, supposed to be nicer tomorrow.

                    • Earthed up, further and staked/supported King Edwards potatoes, from wind and rain - weeded generally, checked radishes, moved gladioli from behind shrubs forward a little, took out nettles and added to compost bin to speed up compost, dug up old shrub, moved some Hollyhocks (need to space them out further next) Tied in new growth on red roses on same bed, swept path

                        • - went up the lotty & just despaired the wind damage: cornflowers, poppies & broad beans snapped at the base
                          - shed roof flapping
                          - inside shed soaking wet
                          - climbing beans hanging off their supports, battered by the 30mph winds
                          - flaming seeding grass weeds EVERYWHERE despite weeding them out every few days
                          - no good news

                            • Dug out some poorly placed Welsh poppies and wishy-washy pink double aquilegias (blech), started hacking back a sapling that needs to be removed and chopped down the comfrey to go in the dalek. Good cure for a grumpy mood!

OH helped me put up another wigwam and I planted out cucumbers, French beans, sweet peas and the first courgette (not all on the same wigwam!). Admired the rocket seedlings that are already coming up.
