  • Today I planted out some rainbow chard, some leeks, and some cabolo nero in the raised bed.

Harvested a couple more sticks of rhubarb and started to make them into wine.

Potted up some thyme, rosemary and tarragon, plus a couple of catmint for out four boys.

Planted a tomato plant in an upside-down planter as an experiment to see how it goes.

Ran out of time (and good weather) before being able to plant the remainder of the cabalo nero, broccoli and curly kale in the other raised bed at the front, and I still have an aubergine and two peppers for a growbag in the back garden which I hope should give them enough shelter from this northern climate.

    • Planted remainder of the celery (I found some more), weeded and tidied, pulled the fat onions in my rock dust experimental bed (far more advanced than the others). They are now laid out to dry undercover. Prepped that now empty bed ready for compost and squashes, which are suitably hardened.
Planted French bean "Pinto" and "Leghorn Wax".
Sowed some carrots and covered with mesh.
Going to pick mi laddo up now from the airport, having had a hot bath!

        • There was no rain this morning at 7.30 so I sowed French beans, Borlotti beans, fagioli beans and some more blue hubbard squash at home. Rushed to allotment and planted out parsnips which have suddenly sprouted in their toilet rolls after 4 and a half weeks. Then it rained. Now 12.45 - But Could it be? Yes it could, Something's coming, Something good - the sun has come out....I'm ... off to the lottie.

          • Four fruit trees in. Hoping for the best. Starting off the Orchard bit up the back. I don't usually get too worried about the plants round the house but I'm hoping these survive. Maybe it's because of how expensive they were :eek
Anyway they are mulched and staked and covered for the night.

And the electric fence is turned on so the horses don't think the mulch is dessert

              • Moved two trays of bean seeds/emerging seedlings that I have no spare seeds to replace and so had planted late to get better weather , into the greenhouse. Figured they could do with no rain having been getting a drenching for a good week now!

(if you're taking two by two of veggies in that ark Binley I have two surviving cucumbers could do with escaping the weather!)

                • Spent all morning and most of the afternoon playing annoy-the-mole. My veg beds are little more than backfilled coffins dug out of the blue clay which after three seasons now has something in it that resembles soil. With worms. And now a mole.
Barsteward has uprooted beans, aubergines, melons and two rows of radiccio. It has tunnelled through seven beds without leaving a single hill, just loads of cavities...

It doesn't look like a tomato year, but the tayberries are coming on.

Nor me, Loudbarker1, just up the road from you.
Walked around shaking my head and tutting, paddled in the polytunnel, slipped on my backside and felt sorry for myself. But then felt even worse for 3 of the plotholders as their plots are completely submerged. They could lose most of their crops.
