What I did today 2012-2014

Sowed Salad Bowl lettuce and Lemon Basil in pots indoors. Primroses, snowdrops and wallflowers in fiower - a sunshiny day

Weeded my allotment.

went down to see that my garlic was sprouting and that the spring onions were still alive in the polytunnel

Cut back brambles, weeded, limed, mulched, riddled,tidied...........meanwhile OH cdarried on woth pimping the shed.......

Dug some pigeon muck into the veg patch and noticed that a few Crocuses and Daffs are coming through slowly. The little fig plant is in a window since it broke dormancy and the figs are growing faster than the leaves. The forced hyacinths in the window are in bloom and the paperwhites have finished flowering and gone outside.
I'll probably plant rhubarb in a day or two and maybe get some Cherry Laurel to repair / replace a dying Hawthorn hedge (it's beyond repair, laying won't help - too much dry shade makes it worse).

Today i re-potted the strawb runners into bigger pots and dug a sort of rectangle trench out and covered an area in black thick plastic then refilled the trench up to keep the plastic down. Should kill off any weeds by spring hopefully!

Went to that quid place with Mama in tow and Santa clause money in my pocket. Purchased five bush roses, two blueberries and two redcurrants. Popped to wilkos and got some seeds.

Popped to the plot and planted the Purchases. Saw some garlic and onions coming up, but less than 10% of what was planted.

What I did? Well nothing over Christmas hols really, except harvesting leeks, sprouts and parsnips for Christmas meals.

YES! First time at the plot this year. A lovely mild morning, if a little grey. But transported the pea sticks that we had 'made' by trimming back trees in the garden, took down (at last) the bean sticks from last year, shifted the big pile of rubbish that had been left to dry so I could burn it (Ha! Ever the optimist) and cardboarded all the smaller beds. It might be a little late for the latter, but 8 -10 weeks without sunlight should certainly weaken some of the rubbish. I felt so positive and optimistic down there - I really do hate the winter. And today felt not wintry at all.

Had chooks out and set to on sowing leeks, onions, shallot seed, celeriac and beetroot. Also planted broad beans into polytunnel. Rockdust mulched the olive trees and the citrus trees. Did some cutting back too.

Did nothing on allotment apart from feed the chooks and collect a solitary egg.

When I got home I checked on my seeds I'd sown (bought half price from dobbies) and they all appear to be up. I have long red Florence onions,Santero onions (supposedly downey mildew resistant) and Lion Prizetaker leeks.
These were all set in 5 inch pots with a polythene bag stretched over the top and placed on a warm windowsill. I have an electric propagator but found the windowsill technique quite adequate.
These have now been moved to another windowsill in the bedroom which isn't heated to the same extent.

Popped the Xmas compost up to the lotty, cut some chard for the guinea pigs and the dog (she loves her veggies). Scooped another sack of leaves off the bike lane, added it to the pile.
