        • Made a BluePeter Growlight box out of junk http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ml#post1073390
Sowed 2 pots of Salad Bowl lettuce and put into prop to germinate - one will be a control to check whether the lightbox is any use!
Moved the germinated Bush Tomatoes (sown 31/12) and Lemon Basil (1/1) into lightbox to join the onions (26/12) and lettuce (3/1).

              • Sowed and put into propagator:

'Bleu de Solaise' Blue Winter Leek (Real Seeds)
The onion seeds that came free with Grow Your Own Magazine
                Basil
                Coriander

Also sowed two small trays of salad lettuce leaves seed. They are sat on the bedroom window sill.

We love the Bleu de Solaise leeks. We are currently using the one's I put in last year (my very first time at growing leeks) and they are absolutely delicious and currently standing up to the windy and very wet weather. If they look in danger of rotting, I'll dig them up and freeze them. I wish I'd grown more (I only have about 40 ) so I'll be putting more into seed trays over the coming weeks.

                    • Had a general sort out in the garden. OH is making a gate so we had to go for some timber.

Pulled up the celeriac - didn't really form roots. Will try again this year. Tidied up the brassica beds and pulled some weeds out of the garlic beds.

Harvested some Golden Wonder main crop potatoes (didn't manage to get them all in before the weather turned. Still have 7 plants to harvest). Harvested all of the turnips (the local bunny has discovered them and so I took the lot up to thwart him - he'll no doubt pick on something else now ). Dug up 4 leeks to use this week. Also the last stalk of sprouts

It's really been the first full day I've been able to enjoy being out in the garden this Christmas hols. Back at work on Monday but hope to get a full day in the garden tomorrow.

Red Robin, Alicante and Sungold tomato seeds arrived today , along with a window sill propagator (unheated).

My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

                          • Cordyline, Pot Marigold and Forget me not seeds arrived at last today. Btw, I've noticed in shops that packets of peas for planing are selling fast - isn't it a little earlier yet? I know it's mild so far, but I thought march was the best time?

                            • Went the allotment after neglecting it for 2 month. Dug over a quarter of it with my new auto spade I brought from a neighbour plot holder for £40. The best £40 I have spent. Gets the job done twice as fast with little back braking effort. Will be back tomorrow to do some more. I've got to move the polytunnel from my old plot I have given up on next weekend as someone want the plot. Should be fun trying to move it :-)

                              • Sowed early Nantes carrots under coldframe, under polytunnel and also sowed bunching onions plus radish - both in polytunnel. Moved all neighbours leaves after raking into a two foot high barrier to stop the chooks escaping to the fields. Sat and watched them dustbathing and thought of the other four. Mr VVG buried Eloïse's ashes with her three playmates in their ring of Pom Pom flowers - can't remember the name (Zazen can). It's where they used to dust bath.
