      • Actually did somethng over weekend - well behind (self-imposed) schedule.

Turned and over compost - there's quite a lot of good stuff in there to be sieved out and spread. Added a few handfulls of pellted chciken dung and a small handful of lime. Covered heaps.

Inpsected black plastic plastic - removed huge numbers of hibernating snails and slugs and threw into road - very satisfying crunch as cars crush them.

Inspected weeds. Removed far too much cat sh*t from area from which leeks had been harvested and coverd with black plastic to (i) warm soil for early lettuce/carrots/parsnips/beetroot/perpetual spinage etc (ii) smother weeds to help the same (iii) discourage said cats.

Checked other areas of weed surpressing membrane/black plastic.

Watered indoor peas - these to be planted out with others into mother's cold house in hopes of early crop.

Looked at seed catelogues - resisted temptation, but will need to order nemaslug. Made a list of when to plant what - to be tempered by weather of course.

We had a bird table for Christmas, so painted that with wood preserver. I'll put it together next weekend. Gloated over strimmer I got for Christmas.

        So next weekend:

        Put bird table together.
        Weed
Savagely cut back last year's hedgy growth and remove the clippings (I really need a shredder) so mum if you are reading this you know what the birthday present is :-))
        Clear gutters
Collect free sheep and/or pigeon dung to boost compost.
Clear decaying brassica leaves from PSB and swedes. Possibly harvest swedes and turnips and parsnips for storage.
Plant out corn salad. They have patiently been waiting outside in plugs for weeks and weeks and there is probably time for a harvest in the space where courgettes will go.

And if I do half that it will be a miracle.

        • Seed order arrived from Kings. I knew we'd over ordered, but blimey... Looking forward to fiddling around reorganising seed box anyway.

Quick check of how winter stored stuff is doing. Enough shallots, potatoes and pumpkins for a while yet, which is nice!

                • Today I will be pricking on turnips, Cima di Rapa, spring cabbage and some early cauli seedlings into modules after germinating them under heat. Also have some Welsh onion seeds (germinated) and some Spring Onion (White Lisbon) which have not germinated, though the seed is a year or so old.
Trying to find a source of tubular greenhouse heaters. Two Wests and Elliott do a good one that's 5ft long and 240 watts, but I suspect postal charges to France will be extortionate. The French don't seem to do them, except as heaters for boats, which are enormously expensive and much lower powered.

                    • - popped a chitted spud (self-saved) into 5" pot in the unheated gh
                      - noticed a clematis cutting has rooted and thrown up 3" of leaves ! My first success with them! Put it in the house, on a cool east windowsill, so the new shoots don't get frosted
                      - made a mahoosive pot of Crown Prince & Canadian Wonder chilli. 14 meals for less than a quid (tin toms, oil, spices).

                          • Collected the rather large qty of cat poo on my new raised bed and scattered some more mustard seed in the area in the hope it's still warm enough.

weeded and tidied up around the raspberries. Placed some purple slate in the area and measured so I can put up a wooden border round them, rang my dad to arrange to come round his house and get the wood cut to size. Replanted my chives and some snowdrop bulbs in the same area and ordered two canes of fallgold raspberries.

Planted some tulip bulbs I got for 99p at homebase in with the strawberry beds.

Separated and re-potted a pretty pink plant I have lost the name of and placed some cardboard around the plum tree to get rid of the grass growing there.
