    • Finally managed to pop up to the lottie this morning (first time for ages!) to take up the onion sets and seed potatoes. Put the potatoes to chit in trays (Rocket and Picassa) and brought the last of the onions and garlic back from the shed. Planted up the garlic at long last.
Next time I'll put the onions into some compost to give them a good start while the soil dries off a bit. (Some hope - I got home and it's poured with rain since!).

      • Washed the inside of the Greenhouse (8x6) glass today and disinfected with ***** Fluid, left the hand tools soaking in it overnight. Also converted on of those crates builders have for roofing tiles into a raised bed for carrots, took eight barrow loads of soil and last years Tom compost to fill but worth it. Thought about taking a few Chrysanthemum cuttings but feel its a bit early here on the NY Moors, oh and a leek I've been over wintering in the GH has gone woody thought it might of done well but never mind...

Due to a serious family illness first time since Christmas I've been able to anything overly constructive on the patch, absolutely wonderful just to sit on the step inside the GH again, 14.7c, and enjoy a cuppa!

        • OK, I'm going to post what I PLAN to do today and then come back to the thread this evening to edit to see what I actually managed to achieve!

          Planning on sowing following seeds:

Half pack of Broad Beans (Bunyards) DONE!
          Peas DONE!
Early nantes carrots in container NOT YET
          Few first radishes NOT YET
Spinach - perpetual and Red Cardinal DONE!
Tomatoes - Moneymaker, Gardener's Delight, Golden Sunrise, red cherry, garden pearl and tigerella DONE!
Potatoes - Swift into bags in the greenhouse DONE!

          Sweet Peas - NOT YET
          Pansies DONE
          Petunias NOT YET

Bonus visit to the allotment this afternoon. Cut and pulled all the brambles that had grown up the apple tree, dug up some weeds in first section of the beds and cleared some rubbish. Also met my neighbour on the allotment who offered me some free strawberry plants.

            • Ive actually done something in the garden this year at last! Hurrah! I emptied one of the beds of destroyed kale and brussells, dug it over and put a large cloche over ready for some broad beans.
and can someone tell me what actually kills caterpillars??? Even being buried under several inches of snow hasnt killed them!!

              • Dug up two rows of carrots - filled (heaping) a black bucket (5Gal? I think).
Marvelled at the fact there are incy wincy tiddly little carrots as well as maybe a dozen alsmot the size of my forearm!
Rough dug over the old carrot plot.
                Washed all those carrots.
Set to peeling and cutting out all the slug damaged bits; cut the decent bits up, washed again and getting them ready for the freezer (better in our bellies than the slugs bellies!)

ETA: 6lb carrots in the freezer; 2lb carrots to next-door neighbour; 1lb carrots sitting in pantry waiting to be turned into carrot cakes (and probably close to 2lb carrot bits in the compost bin due to slug damage).

                • Lifted the last 4 good size leeks. Threw away rubbish swedes that refused to grow. Transplanted 40 more leeks & sowed Shallot sets in the SFG bed through sheet mulch. Transplanted overwintering strawbs into their own bed again through sheet mulch.....covered newspaper with rotted chippings...I plan to beat the weeds this year........

                  • Finished off digging the carrot and parsnip bed, ready to rumble when the weather gets warmer!
Then tidied some pallets away from the shed. These were on a space I intended to have as a herb bed, but did not materilise. It will now hopefuly!!

                    • Took delivery of 6 Glaskins Perpetual Rhubarb roots - to become the start of my rhubarb grove. (not planted yet!!)
Tracked down the pong to the brussels sprouts that had been sat in water for a month (yeah, I know it was stoopid) but some have rooted
Discovered that the potatoes in bags in the GH, that had had their tops killed off by frost, are sprouting again
Lots of lush green salad/mustard leaves in the GH that have survived a month of neglect, freezing temperatures and snow.
                      Happy days

                      • Put some wooden edging round my raspberry canes/rhubarb and filled the space with plum slate.

Planted some flowers in my windowsill greenhouse.

Started a gardening book for 2013. Should start placing bets for which month I stop filling it in.

Painted me new drawers I bought to fill with my seed packets.

                        • Decided to have a flower sowing day as I bought loads of seeds in the half price sales. Planted busy lizzie, petunia, sweet peas, malope, stocks, clematis, and scabious.
I've also planted some of the seeds from the exotics, passion fruit, woad, and some of the tree spinach.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

                          • Begun clearing all that rough ground corner where Tansy is buried and have started a woodland border that VC would be proud of I reckon. I've never known what to do with it up by the hedge, so I have always done nothing. But not any more, for I am planning hellebores, winter aconites, snowdrops and cyclamen. A bench has gone by the big lime tree facing that corner. Can't think why I didn't do this years ago.
We have cleared all Mr VVG's rubbish off it - so bricks, slate, compost corner no more! Lovely black soil from horse muck that stood on it for years too. So far I have gone at it with my copper mattock and it's clearing through it in no time. It will look beautiful when everything has naturalised and the two crab apples up there are big and blossomed.
A corner fit for an old friend!

PS. I cleaned the girls' house out too and gave them some stumpery in their new WIR to stand around/perch on.

                            • So decided to do something with that awkward dark corner surrounded by neighbours Laurel and Leylandii, for a couple of years I've used it to store cut down branches for logs, glass cloches and spare pavers but nothing useful has ever succesfully grown there, even in June it never seems to have full sun except for a couple of hours in the very early morning, and as its sloping away its been 'forgotten' about but not anymore!

I went and bought a nice new incinerator bin and burnt the last of the wood away and the straws that had built up on the Veg patch over the winter, pavers have been laid as a path from the corner toward the Veg patch, I'll have to buy a few more but its a start, and the cloches have been placed around the edge of the patch. The corner will never really do for Veg growing far too dark and wet but it makes a nice spot for the compost heap and a couple of old panels hide it away anyway so started to move the compost heap and its current site is going to become the home of the brassicas this year (Thats the plan anyway ) .
