  • Sown two varieties of tomatoes, and some chilli seeds. I've also sown a full packet of onion seeds dated 2009 in the hopes that even just a couple will germinate. I know they don't last very well but the seed was expensive and thought it doesn't hurt to try!

    • We had a sunny afternoon in Ilkley, so I went to lottie and repositioned a climbing rose, put compost, manure and bark around the base of various fruit trees and bushes, dug compost into another patch, did some weeding and planted 45 broad beans under a poly tunnel that I bought this morning for a fiver at Boyes. Oh, and harvested some Brussell sprouts. Forgot to take a flask of coffee, but apart from that, it was blimmin' marvellous!!

          • Planted 2 huge clumps of rhubarb (thanks Marchogaeth) and 6 small roots in a big circle around a recently planted apricot tree.
Then I moved my buckets of garlic, shallots and perennial leeks out of the GH and put them in front of the baby rhubarbs to stop me walking over their delicate little pink noses, that are just poking out of the soil.
Took delivery of 3 Japanese Wineberries.
Wandered around the garden with a 7' tall peach tree, puzzling about where to plant it. There's a greengage to find a home for too

              1. Moved the peach tree into a much larger container that someone gave me. (I bought one of the Red Havens from Aldi last week - most of their fruit trees are gone now)
              2. Planted the grape vines I'd ordered, I got them yesterday. 2 Kempsey Black and 1 Korinka Russkaja. The containers are big for now, they're only tiny at the moment.
              3. Moved the junk around, tidied up and erected a lean-to tent from a tarpaulin to keep rain and snow off the potted plants. They can take some, but I don't want them to have soaking wet roots for the rest of winter. I'll take it down in mid March I think. I've ran out of shed space.
              4. Bought another bag of compost which I intend to use as a growbag for strawberries. Bought more strawberry plants from Aldi - Calypso everbearer and Honoeye early. Had to resist the temptation of buying a citrus tree, luckily my brain kicked in and suggested that it would do poorly in our summers outside and that they were bitter varieties anyway.
              5. Indoor fig plant dropped its last fig that had been developing. Maybe they can't fruit indoors, but I checked it out and found the roots to be very dry. I've previously had trouble with over watering them (which too causes it to drop leaves and fruit). Watering it only once a week in a hot room probably wasn't enough, now all I have is foliage. Gave it a good soaking anyway.

              • Bought some Wilko cranberries, which hopefully should spur me into getting my acid fruit bed done tomorrow. We shall see. Went to plant some celeriac, then realised that, despite three biscuit tins full 'o seeds, I don't actually have any celeriac. Oops.

                • Went nuts at the garden centre, again.

Bought 400 litres of compost and peat moss, three bags farmyard manure, three more varieties of seed potato new in - that's 14 now, really must stop - 50 yellow moon shallots, beetroot seeds, rainbow chard, hollow parsnip and cayenne pepper seeds.

Popped to Aldi to see what was left of the fruit trees. One conference pear tree was about three inches across the trunk! It's like they chopped down a five year old tree by mistake... root ball was normal sized though. Passed on that, bought some long raspberry whips instead. Six canes for £8, and they are all six foot tall, so I'm hopeful of good fruit this year.

Haha, you sound like me. I told myself that I'd buy next to nothing this year, my new year's resolution is now just a distant memory. Oh well, I still spend less on gardening than my dad does on pigeons.

There were some like that at my local Aldi too, I wish they had ones so vigorous when I bought one last year. I guess it's probably on an unusual rootstock, the huge conference's I saw looked more like a Bramley apple.

                    • Sown a few hanging basket seeds this afternoon. Sowed my early brassicas yesterday.

                      • Did so more tidying up today. Another fire in the incinerator bin. Plot looking tidier.
Also started and finished laying cardboard and rotted manure and compost on the last bed.
This is going to be another no dig area. 4hrs on the plot, where did it go!!
So I'm happy and will be ready to go.
P.S. was going to upload some photo's, but couldn't work out why nothing happened. I have a new mobile and have yet to grasp all the features.
My new Thermos is no more after using it just once. Went to have a coffee, and the bloomin thing exploded on me as I opened it!
I hope all my new seeds come up!!!!!

Hope this is ok to put on thread, as I couldn't see somewhere to post.
I thank you for any help

                              • Finally finished the netting on the raised beds, stop the big hungry woodies eating everything I sow. Started planting to the square foot pattern and plan, planted 27 garlic cloves in three separate square feet - will see how the rest of the beds work out. Made a plywood template and some wooden rulers with feet notches cut in them, makes positioning easy. Need to remember what's gone where now!
