What I did today 2012-2014

Had such great plans to get up and finish off the cold frame I am making, but the need for a long lie then a totally engrossing Scotland vs Ireland rugby match took over, so no further forward.

Hate to say it when you're all so busy to keep warm..........but it's flipping boiling here again today!

Son and I hacked down all the chard........ but it had to be done. Some was going to seed, so spread the seed out, it will shoot up again in 5 mins in this weather anyway. Seems odd chopping up veg, but as Jackie French says - you don't need the shopping mentality, where you have to eat it just because you bought it. If you're not eating it, put it back into the ground and it will come up again, or as something else.
Pulled any small amounts of grass. I took the sun dried tomatoes off the first plant that turned it's toes up, and put the too far gone one's into the ground, and the others to put into oil and garlic. Then pulled out the 2nd tomato and hung it upside down on the deck, so it can continue to ripen. Then hacked up the comfrey, make two bags to go into the water butts for comfrey tea. Applied comfrey to the front garden beds. Then mulched over the whole lot. Well son finished the mulching as I had to go into town to be annoyed by annoying people.
Pulled out heaps of pig face as it's taking over the garden, but the bees were loving it.
Started pruning the herbs, but decided to do that another day. Want to propogate some for ourselves and others, and then hang up and dry some. Too much organising on a hot busy day like today.

I'll start the comfrey tea this evening and son is going to do a little mowing and tidying up out the back. Grass is taking off like a mad thing with the rain and more sun.

I'm really going to try to plant a few seeds tonight anyway as I'm working 4 days straight now and will be too knackered to do much till the w/e and busy then anyway. Just want to feel like some things are going to be ready for autumn.

Well I've finally got the greenhouse cleared and swept out this weekend the last of the pallets cut up for firewood and loads of kindling chopped!

The only thing that now needs to be moved out of it is my son's trampoline and I've promised him that I'll put that up in a couple of weeks (hopefully we'll have seen the last of the snow).

I've planted the kiwi and raspberry canes I bought last week into big pots and they are stood in the greenhouse. Can actually see the space I have now and can start planning where to put things. Need to buy some pots or growbags for the toms / peppers / cucumbers to go in. Also need to start planning on how I'm supporting plants..... probably just canes.

Potted up a gooseberry (Careless) and white current (Blanka) freebie curtesy of DT Brown and one of the mags - £5.60 postage only!

If you keep your wits about you and don't mind a buit of propagating you can get pretty well all your soft fruit just for the cost of postage.

So far I have obtained:

5 Blueberries and 1 pinkberrry (can't remember the cultivars)

2 tayberries
1 blackberry (Rubens)
3 red currents (Rovarda and Jonkher van Tets x2)
Rose current
White Current (Blanka)
2 Blackcurrent (Titannia and Ben Sarek)2x Gooseberry (Careless and Hinnomarki yellow)

Not bad. And there was a Victoria plumb as well.

I managed to lay the second lot of patio slabs for a base for the other green house hopefully both greenhouse will be fully up tomorrow made another video thats just uploading onto youtube its around 9.30 minutes long and a full tour of my plot so feel free to have a look and maybe give me any advice pointers

Been away for a few days and had hoped to get out in the garden to finish my wheely soil sifter today but it's soooo cold that I decided to stay indoors and pot on my chillies and early sown toms. I sowed far too many toms not expecting such a good germination rate so I won't need to do another sowing at the usual time.

Went to a meeting at work .......
Bought some new jeans.....
Pricked out some seedlings and sowed prechitted sweet peas.....
Went and collected a secondhand Chef .......

Took bags of rubbish to the tip, tidied greenhouse a bit, sorted through seeds.

Sowed some herbs this morning along with some peas for there shoots off on the school run now then to put the two greenhouse up well that's the plan anyway

Planted some spuds into the border soil in the poly. Not many but enough to try it. Back in for coffee, then back out to do peas in a pot for their shoots and some leeks need sowing.

Sown leeks and now off to pot some strawbs up for the polytunnel, suppose it should really go in the undercover bit.

Nice potted Pinkberry arrived yesterday and was adopted by Miss Loudbarker. We will pot it up over the weekend

moved 3 more 80 ltr bins full of cow manure up to plot, that makes 9 in total. also moved chicken run soil up to plot 3 more 80 ltr bins. my back is done now. looking forward to 1st sowings this weekend

Evening! I moved some tomato plants into the blowaway that's double wrapped inside the heated greenhouse. They had better be warm enough in there! I only moved two of each variety in there and have kept the rest on the kitchen windowsill in case something happens to them. Also took some cauliflower seedlings out of the heated propagator and into the unheated one. It's like musical chairs in this house!
