  • Went to the plot for a little while this morning. I used chopped up bamboo sticks and string to mark out all my beds for the time being. I should have some manure delivered during the week so hopefully I can spread that on to what will be the brassica and legume beds.

      • Potted up new bare rooted roses as the ground isn't ready for them yet. Put spuds to chit (pink fir apple).

        • Pricked out and potted on some red Drumhead cabbage. Should have done it last week, they had become a bit leggy, but I've sunk them deep so fingers crossed. Too wet, muddy and cold to carry on. Hoping for some sunshine tomorrow.

          • Investigated the nether regions of the fridge and found a bag of Sturon onion sets and a bag of pink fir apple from last year, all of which have chitted mightily. Think the PFAs will be fine, not sure about the onions. Froze the female equivalent of my n*ts off down at lottie. Received an email from a distant acquaintance offering me a cubic metre of garden compost! Aren't people nice? Dunno how I'll get it down to lottie, but I'll try.

            • I finally finished my cold frame.

Started looking at seeds to see what is "next up".

              • Watered all my window-ledge seedlings and spoke to them firmly re: not dying while I'm away in Berlin for a week. (Actually a friend will pop in at some point so they should be okay).

                • Carp outside at allotment so decided to spend a few hours in the greenhouse with the woodburner at full blast doing a bit of seed sowing.
Had to chop the wet wood first which warmed me up a bit. Managed to get woodburner lit and it warmed the place through.
Sorted chooks whilst greenhouse was warming up. Got five eggs today so the egg rate is steadily improving.
Back in greenhouse, I sorted out which shallots I could replant and replanted some of them in a seedtray.

                  Sowed in pots:-

                  Bosworth F1 Brussel Sprouts
                  Trafalgar F1 Brussel Sprouts
                  Caramba F1 (Sweetheart cabbage)
                  Belstar F1 Calabrese
                  Musselburgh Leeks
                  Nasturtions
                  Cornflowers
                  Sunflowers (giant)
                  Poppies
                  Poppies (pink frilled)
                  Calendulas

I sorted my Desiree potatoes into trays for chitting but decided to take them home and put them on the windowsill as I can't guarantee my greenhouses will be frost free.

Noticed the peach tree in the greenhouse was starting to bud up and made a mental note to cover it with bubble wrap before it flowers and add a bit more compost to the large pot its in.

Eventually tottered off home with some leeks the missus had asked for and half a dozen eggs.
I had to endure shop bought eggs for a couple of weeks whilst mine were having a rest, which made me realise how lucky I am to have my own hens as the shop bought eggs were minging!

                  End of epic adventure!

                          • Noticed runner beans are growing alarmingly fast on the windowsill. Were slow to start but have surpassed the peas that were there two weeks prior to them in a matter of 2 days! They're already 4 inches tall!
I'm just worried that I may have to grow bean stalks indoors now until the cold weather passes - no greenhouse...

Anyone had similar problems? Any tips?

I exhale on mine sometimes. I hope the slight increase in CO2 combined with the water I spray on them will help them photosynthesize more efficiently. They're in a stuffy bedroom where it probably rises at night anyway with the room being occupied.
