  • Sowed Latah tomatoes on t'windowsill today. They join Moneymaker, which have now germinated, and Tumbling Tom. Latah are said to be very early fruiters (or should that be vegetablers?) Has anyone else tried them?

    • B1oody lovely day here in the valleys that said its been a busy one too!

After my wife and I dropped the kids off at school a quick spin up to the allotment and managed to get the second green house base (stone/patio slabs) finished and then on to the metal base that went together in a heart beat so that was the progress we wanted to make complete so we had a quick look at the time WHAT only 0945 so we planted some shallots and about 100 blubs and gave a toplayer of compost!

So surely it must be 1300 now!!..........Nope

While we were there and it being such a lovely sunny day we cracked on with the green house frame being the second one we kind of knew what we were doing so that it up clipped to the base and all ready for glazing YEY
In the following link you can follow my recent progress on the plot

      • Gave in to grandson's request for BIG tomatoes (as opposed to the usual Sungold and Gardener's Delight) and sowed some Moneymaker seeds for him.

          • It was a frosty morning here and now it's raining so not much opportunity to do much. I gathered up some of the bigger stones churned up from digging out the pond and put them at the edge ot the little stream. It's very wet and unsafe so I'm going to stone a small area of it to make it safer to fill water for the pond, the trees and the veg.

              • - cleared 2 beds and got the broad beans planted out
                - mulched beds with coffee grounds & a couple buckets of seaweed (lots, after the gales)
                - bought an £8 Lidl lopper, which made short work of the 4 buddlejas I look after. Marvellous
                - stacked chopped buddleja in a pile in the Wildlife Garden, as beetle habitat

                    • Lean-to greenhouse (self assembly) arrived and I have never seen so many bits and pieces, also the assembly instructions run to a scary number of pages but 'spect the best thing is just to get on with it, even if it takes till 2014.

                      • I found that everything I sowed direct , didn't do very well if at all. Seeds nurtured under cover did really well for me after being hardened off and transplanted. Just keep on checking the weather!
Anyways, sowed my collection of 30 different tomato seed varieties. Hope to find out which ones I like the taste of, ease of growing and sauce making.

                          • Sowed matador spinach, little gem lettuce, losso rosso lettuce, beetroot, sweetcorn, Tondo Chiaro di Nizza courgette and put some red duke of york potato seeds into one of my dustbins.

Started trying to dig paths and level the ground for next raised bed but too wet. Had a nice mud bath though.

Checked on my early nantes carrots I planted out in Feb and they are starting to germinate!

                              • Potted on some tomato seedlings (Marmande and black cherry) and put some more in the greenhouse.

I checked through the early broad beans I planted at the start of January and chucked out the seeds that had rotted and discovered about 6 of them are slowly germinating. Took the other broad beans out of the extra protection to begin hardening off process. Moved onion seeds and sets from greenhouse to coldframe.

Went up to the allotment and covered 3 and a half beds with manure. Ran out of time to finish the fourth.

                                Think that's it.
