One bit of old folklore wisdom says to plant tomatoes when the soil is warm enough to sit on with bare buttocks. In surburban areas, use the back of your wrist. Jackie French

Potted on about a dozen Moneymaker seedlings. Had too many, so as I was visiting a mate anyway, I potted some up for her. 'That windowsill would be ideal for growing tomatoes,' sez I. 'I'd never have thought of that,' sez she. 'And they smell nice, tomato plants, don't they?'

My Autumn 2016 blog entry, all about Plum Glut Guilt:
Daughter mowed for me, and I made another bed between the apple trees for strawberries. If they all grow well and fruit we will be eating them for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
ETA: Nearly forgot - I was in the front garden, turned my back for a minute and there were two big holes dug in the garden! The vegetarian dog was burying her non vegetarian bones in there! So the fence went back up!

chitting beetroot and sea kale seeds, dug some sand in border for the sea kale seeds. planted a few cuc seeds as one of my plants had died. Planted some shallots, sowed large tub of candytuft to attract the insects. spotted new growth on gooseberry bushes bought off ebay for 5 pounds. Lettuce going mad in the GH, along with cauli's and psb and cabbage. Collected 4 eggs from my 5 hens so treated them to nuts and mealworms
Went to the lottie to start preparing the beds, met one of the other plot holders, got given loads of advice and he even lent us a tool to help with the raking, it was a three pronged affair and certainly made things a lot easier.
Down the allotment for 5 hours again today enjoying the sunshine. Almost finished de-couching bed number 3 and spread over some semi fresh manure onto the sweet corn and bean areas as I am wagering my they wont be in the ground until June at this rate. That is enough time to take the sting out of the manure and I will just plant through it when I put in the corn and beans using it as a mulch.
Starting to clear the "cliff". Had to stop when my legs turned to jelly
Another day like today will see most of it done - at least the bits that I can reach
Down the allotment, was joined by Mrs H for the first time. Between us, we:
- cleared bramble thicket to create a stoney path to the plot
- sorted through the junk mountain and decided what to keep, what to take down the tip
- emptied the compost bin left by previous occupant onto bed number 1
- dug half of bed number 2.

Potted on more toms, transplanted leeks, sowed some gifted toms and some "Screw you, give me back my lima beans". (also a gift from my very good friend)
Dug over a 4'0" wide bed 12'0" long and removed Jerusalem Atichokes and parsnips from last year. Planted 21 (exactly the amount I got in bag!) Kestrel seed potatoes.
After raking bed level I dug individual holes with a trowel about 10" deep and planted each spud. I then covered them up to soil level with old potting compost and raked the whole bed level.
One tattie bed done, three more tattie beds to do at a later date.
I don't normally ridge my potatoes as I find it increases the amount of green spuds I get. Instead, I will mulch heavily with straw, especially when they have broken surface and frost is forecast.
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)
Planted out over wintered broadies, and sowed 2 rows directly. Did some weeding on the border. Dug the last of the leeks and parsnips for dinner, and managed a tablespoon of mint from the pot in the gh.
Didn't do a great deal today, pricked out 2 dozen Marigold & a dozen cabbage, put them in the kite under some cheapo tunnels from £land.
