  • Lovely sunny and almost-thinking-about-being-warmish morning, so despite the snuffly cold that's kept me home from work I went out to sow some more seeds in the cold frame: radishes, two kinds of kale, chard, perpetual spinach/leaf beet, two kinds of leeks, and several small pots each of parsley, chervil, and chives.

    Also dug out the watering tray and capillary matting for the wee chillies 'cause I'm a chronic underwaterer. One of my pokey Joe E. Parker seeds has finally showed his head, hooray!
    March is the new winter.

    • Another couple of hours at the allotment this afternoon. Finally finished getting rid of the brambles from next door

      Collected a wheelbarrow full of poo from the heap at the entrance.

      Turned really cold, so came home earlier than planned

          • We're doing something a bit crazy in preparation to get the polytunnel up. The earth is very caked, from being left bare for too long. There is a lot of roots in it, from couchgrass and possibly mares tail and bindweed. So we dug down and took the first 6 inches of the soil off and put it in a big pile. We then dug over to get out any remaining weeds. We'll add well rotted woodchip onto the top.

            The roots I got out are ready to be drowned. And the pile of top stuff will be left to be dealt with later. We'll either leave it all to rot down for a year or two- or maybe let it dry a bit and then sieve it a bit.

            The polytunnel will hopefully go up this week, so I can get some seeds going. Though still a bit cold for that!

                • Potted on tomatoes and peppers and put them in a styrene foam box in the polytunnel, for protection from these frosts! Tidied up polytunnel. Used my new thermos flask and had lots of coffee!!!

                  • - dug out all my lavenders at home, and replanted at school
                    - ditto violets & muscari
                    - fed all 120 of the box & hebe that are waiting to be planted at home, as soon as it warms up a bit
                    - split the huge arum lily into 4, and replanted around the back garden
                    - cut back the too-big hebe & the old passiflora vine
                    - got the old man to put in my vine-eyes and wire for the climbing Iceberg
                    - trained in the Iceberg, it's a monster. So vigorous
                    - turned the dog-poo dalek (surprisingly unsmelly until I split one of the 'parcels'
                    - left the dog-poo compost (now a heap) to continue rotting down
                    - moved & started filling the empty dalek, with all the prunings & old foliage
                    - split & replanted some of the snowdrop clumps
                    - removed iris foetida, which I really don't like
                    - tried to remove the 3 carex pendula that sowed themselves. Couldn't. Will ponder how to kill it
                    - continued sowing in the heated props
                    - watered the gh with seaweed feed
                    - met my 1st client & helped her plant up 2 raised beds with veg from my gh & lotty
                    - showed her how to read a seed packet, esp the bit that says "plant at 15-20c", not direct outside in the cold !
                    - gave the back garden a watering ! (it is really dry) with the bath pump

                    • So far today...

                      I went up the allotment and covered the leek bed with manure and then fleece as I'm hoping to plant straight into it in a couple of weeks time for baby leeks;

                      Fleeced over the potato bed;

                      Planted out some onion sets that had been started in modules;

                      Planted out broad bean plants under a cloche;

                      Dug more of the polytunnel area - I reckon I've done at least 1/3 of the area now.

                      Planning on planting seeds this afternoon for courgette (4 varieties), melon, winter squash and cucumber (3 varieties).

                        • Am presently at work (having a crafty minute on the computer !) but as soon as it hits 4 o'clock I will be down the lotty faster than a speeding bullet to:
                          Water the seedlings in the greenhouse
                          sow some more peas
                          sow some lettuce, mustard and beans
                          start off some lavender, marigolds and nasturtiums.
                          Hope that the weather gets better and warmer !
