  • Plante spuds (Charlotte & Nicola). They're in deep and plenty of earthing up to do which should help them avoid the frosts.

Sowed Turnips, Beets & Parsnips outside under poly.

Sowed a tub of Carrots, under fleece. At 70p for 1500 seeds if they fail theres plenty more where they came from.

And pricked out sprouts into bigger pots, now sitting under poly having a sunbathe.

It felt good just to get out and sow stuff...

    • There's something very wrong with the world when it's too cold to plant your potatoes but you still have to mow the lawn.

Stiill, a bit of sun and no return of the arctic weather forecast for at least the next 10 days, so I have taken the plunge and planted out shallot and red onion sets and also the broad bean plants which have been raised in a cold greenhouse. I might even push the boat out and waste a few more carrot, spring onion and beetroot seeds under fleece early next week. Possibly some lettuce seed too, if I feel really extravagant.

Of the seven overwintered broad beans plants which have survived on the allotment at least four don't look very well. This is a tactic I shan't be repeating. Nor with spring onions either (completely disappeared). Greyhound cabbage, purple sprouting and garlic have done well, however, so I shall probably limit my future overwintering ambitions to them

        • Walked down to Poundstretcher and bought one of those 3ft troughs and attached it to my garage windowsill outside ready for my iceberg lettuce later....

Then cut a piece of wood to size to prop up my garden fence that is leaning slightly( hopefully it wont sway as much now when its windy)..

Bought mealworms, suet block and nyger seed from Wilcos for the birds in the garden and put all that out for them

Nice and warm out in our garden today

Checked on the moruga scorpions under the bedroom radiator and all have sprouted...Lovely!!

Also ordered my first heated propagator and a bottle of chilli focus off Amazon while I wait for the Grand National....lol.

          • - started my French beans chitting
            - potted on lobelia
            - took more cuttings of pelargoniums, fuchsia & osteospermum
            - planted more violets up the school
            - finally got the spuds in. Dug out the (alkaline) soil, replaced with 2yo leafmould. Perfect
            - planted out a dozen more broadies
            - checked the direct sown BBs (puzzled, as none have appeared). They've germinated, and stopped. The ground is too dry
            - watered everything, nearly emptying two water butts, which is all I've collected all winter
            - planted out a tray of pitiful autumn-sown onions. Waste of time, the spring sown are bigger
            - planted out a few more of the box plants, weeding as I go, transplanting old stuff to the school

            - realised that some ppl don't want to be helped, and it would be less painful for me if I just saved my breath

Which tunnel did you go for? Looking for one myself in a couple of weeks :-)

                      • Potted on kale Nero, cauli, celeriac (how can something so delicate as a seedling turn into such a large ugly lump of deliciousness?), poached egg plants and cornflowers. Sowed petunias. Potted on 6Black Russian toms and 5 Sungold. Enjoyed the warmth of the sun, hope it continues to shine tomorrow.

                        • Planted out some broad beans and put a makeshift cage over them to deter the rabbits. Also put 4 in a big pot as reserves!
Planted some Asda shallots as a few that I put in pot are shooting. Didn't want to plant them straight out in case they'd been treated with summat inhibiting.
Filled some of me old drawers (wooden!) with compost ready for sowing something
Lots of bramble raking and snipping.
A good day in the sunshine - max temp 10c in the shade - its 6c now at 7

                          • It was still really cold this morning so set up my capillary matting watering system for all the seedlings that can't go out before we go to France. We'll only be away for a couple of weeks so they should be fine.

Then this afternoon the sun finally came out and the wind died down!

Planted out some potatoes at last - Charlottes and Casablanca. The Kifli will have to wait until I've finished digging out a new bed for them - made a start on that today though.

Also started hardening off my indoor sown broad beans. They'll have to go out next Thursday so hopefully they'll be okay by then...

                            • Took KCN out shopping...

To a garden centre around 45 miles away!

Despite her "no more plants unless they are truly unusual" remit, bought some red onion sets and planted them up on our return.

Dog proofed the small bit of lawn we have, so I can restart it, as the dogs have basically killed it off by peeing all over it last year. It now has loads of canes and green netting around it.
