  • Potatoes into their growing sack/bags
12 lettuce seedling into troughs in the greenhouse
    Whole load of onions sown
3 sweet potato cuttings I took last year that have been sat on the windowsill into a large potato grow sack and stashed at the end of the greenhouse.

If I can summon up the energy this afternoon I have a couple more beds to dig for the rest of the alliumns and brassicas.

    • Got the rest of the onions in, bagged the potatos, sowed lots of seeds (various stuff) and crossed fingers they don't blow away! Checked the temp for the patty pans after digging in lots of manure. Also realised I have more seedlings than room.

Boy is it bad out ther just now, had to come in out of the wind for a cuppa.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

      • Sowed PSB because if everyone else is, I am and cauli in purple and lime green, plus usual Romanesc one. Had lunch and a coffee in the greenhouse. Took mum shopping, gave her the three ajugas that I'd bought for her and she gave me an old moss rose she couldn't use. Back home and everybody is moaning do I'm now going back out to the greenhouse with my dog and a coffee.
Oh almost forgot, I planted up a thrift and another alpine planter.

        • Did more chilli shuffling. Spotted three baby Spanish mammoth peppers that had germinated but still have their heads stuck in their seed cases. Left them well alone. That brings it up to 9/60 seedlings from round two to go with the 8 from the first round.

                  • Apologised to my seedlings - they seem to have recovered after 2 weeks of being unloved and unwatered;
Had lunch outside in the sun and dozed off
Sat on the slabs and poked a twig along the joints to clean out the moss - convinced myself that I was being busy
Jammed my finger in the door - dented my nail. Will it turn an impressive purple so that I can wave it around for sympathy
                    An enjoyably lazy day!!

                    • Popped to the allotment to check ononions sets I planted yesterday - wanted to make sure the birds hadn't unplanted them. Ended up having a lovely conversation with the plot holder opposite mine. He showed me round his polytunnel and beds and we had a lovely chat.

I think the potholder next to me has given up. We both took on the plots the first weekend of January but no-one has seen her since about the third week of January.

The stakes for my polytunnel have arrived. They are about a foot long and should hold it down well.

Took some courgettes out of the propagator.

                      • Hmmm... well yesterday I finally planted a small bag of red onion sets in a 'spare' section of a raised bed, then realised I'd planted them on top of the parsnips I'd planted the previous day and hadn't labelled 'cos it was raining and I knew I'd remember what was in there. Guess what I'm doing today...?

                        • A few sunny days- hurrah!

So Miss ludbarker, Master Loudbarker and I did lots in the garden:

Planted potatos: Arran Pilot and Red Duke of York. These were chitted tubers into holes 2 or 3 inches deep. The area was then given a mulch of an inch of home made compost and then another layer of an inch or so of freshly clipped grass cliipings. Finally on top went a layer of black plastic. This will be replaced by permiable fabric - the idea is that the layers of mulches will stop weeds growing and does away with the need to earth up. To stop slugs I use nemaslug, all watered through holes cut in the fabirc through which the spuds will grow.

Planted (In greehouse) tomato seeds (Moneymaker, Sungold, Latah, San Marzeno, Stupice and Legend Bush). Just a few seeds of each. They will be outside toms, so I don't feel guilty about being about a mnthy later than evryone else here.

Also lettuce - All the Year Round, Little Gem, Grandpa Admires' and Australian Yellowleaf in modules.

Also celeriac: I've never tried these before. Var. Monarch in modules. I followed the seed packet which says you can cover with a little compost rather than just leaving the seed on top of the compost and covering with glass.

Also beetroot, wich I am trying in modules for the first time. One multigerm seed in each module of Albino (yes a white one - very sweet and tasty last year, also Detroit (frst time with this variety for me) and good ol' bolthardy.

Also leeks. I sow these in a big pot of multipurpose compost with a layer of seed compost on top then the seeds and then another sprinking of seed compost. Varieties were a mixture of musselbrugh amd musselburgh improved (in the same pot) and Bleu de Soliste (a new one for me). I need about 150 plants, even in my small leek patch of 2m x 2m. We eat them pretty quickly.

I'm wondering why my broad beans (sowed about 4 weesk ago) still haven't germinated - yes I know it was cold. The overwintering aqudulce are (i) about 6 inches high and (ii) flowering. Which is wierd.

Lastly (and this is the best bit) I harvested (i) corn salad and over wintered lettuce for my first green salad of the year and (ii) the first PSB. I ate it with butter and pepper, ater the salad. Wow!

Nest Saturday is supposed to be sunny too!
