  • Watered in greenhouse and poly, whilst all the time wondering if either was close to crashing down on my head. Sown Orlaya Grandiflora, Lacecap Cow Parsley and some pot marigolds because I had forgotten. Spent most of my time picking up next door's rubbish from off my garden.

      • - spent another afternoon digging couch grass and horsetails out of the school garden: I lifted the weed membrane (which, incidentally, doesn't kill it, just sends it off sideways to seek the light) right off, dug down a spit and pulled out as much root as I could before replacing the membrane and bark chippings.

When the garden was created, it seems the weeds weren't dug out at all, simply covered up. So now they come up in all the beds, every year. The main "nest" is under the 12ft decking which I simply can't get at.

When it starts to rot I'll get it up and out properly. For now, all I can do is keep it at bay with regular pulling and close planting (close planting is good at shading out horsetail, but not couch grass. That stuff needs to be totally removed).

        • Popped into the allotment on the way home from work and gave my newly moved peas a good soak and as soon as I finished the heavens opened and I drove home smelling like a wet dog

          • Rescued a pane from the greenhouse that I have not long put up and has already cracked Swept up the bark chippings off the drive way and checked on seedlings and plants in the greenhouse. Went for a walk and closed the farmers gate just in time, the cows were planning a get away Whilst on walk looking at all the damage hedges blown over, traffic signs ripped off and bins falling over with garden waste everywhere

            • Did the chilli shuffle. Found a single germinated sweet mini red pepper, and nearly keeled over. Have never managed to germinate one of them before. Found sunflower seeds. Raised seed stasher for next sowings. Asked Aunty tish for more green and yellow mustard. Got a tour of her allotment plot.

              • Picked up the shattered remains of the greenhouse after a bit of roof cladding and wood had liberated itself from a nearby outbuilding in the gale like winds we had last night.

Put a quick fix repair in place to (hopefully) last until the 3mm extruded acrylic panels arrives (unlike glass these damn near indestructible so it wont happen again and not have the flimsy feel of polycarb panels)

Guess I don't need to do any pruning now.....

                • Planted out some broad beans, dug compost into the spud bed - sodden a spit down - and finally got the spuds in.
Brought all the peppers, tomatoes etc back inside after their holiday outside as it is due to be cold for the next few days.

                      • Daydreamed about all the stuff I'm going to get done this weekend.
Worried about what the wind might have done to my poly cloche, fleece and weed fabric.
Did a little happy dance at the sight of my tomato seeds germinating.
Put a packet of sweet corn out to chit (avg contents:35. actual contents: 48).

                        • Moved all of my outdoor seedlings indoors as there's going to be a frost tonight apparently and I'm not sure if these will cope well with it at all! They are getting kicked out again tomorrow though as the kitchen, bedrooms and now lounge resemble a garden center

                            • Planted potatoes in cardboard boxes in a trampoline frame (doesn't everyone?)
Planted out 56 white onion from modules into a patch of ground under trees (bad move but when there's nowhere else.......)
Cleared brambles and ivy and baby ash trees.
Talked to my seedlings and shuffled them around the greenhouse - just for fun
                              Enjoyed the sunshine

                              • Those "earlibird" sweetcorn chitted quick. Only took 3 days Potted 81 seeds (out of 100) into compost filled toilet rolls. Left the other seeds a bit longer in the chitting tray to see if they take.
                                Sowed 8 courgette seeds
                                2 Sunstripe
                                2 Parador
Both these plants produce yellow courgettes one obviously with a stripe! I chose to grow these as one of my plot neighbours gave me a couple and I thought they tasted better than the green ones.

                                2 Safari
These are normal green types without the prickles!
                                2 Marketmore cues.
Outside on the plot, I planted the module sown beetroot.
Before packing up for home I looked on my mobile for the weather forecast. It had the temps down to -1, so as a precaution I put fleece over all the tender plants in the poly.
