  • Lots of sowing over the weeeknd:

courgettes (10 seeds each of Defender and Soleil - nto all for me!)
    butternut squash: harrier
cucumber 10 seeds of burpless tasty green
various flowers given to me on my birthday by children

Tomatos seeds planted three weeks ago are slowly germnated, as is the celeriac!

Mowed law and put some clippings into compost heap with kitchen roll inners surplus to requriements.

took black plastic off potatos: plan is to re-cover with weed surpressing membrane with holes for the spuds to grow through. We shall see if I get round to it.

Lats autumn I plantd variosu varieties of peas to over winter4 in our cldhouse. Some (twinkle) are just starting to flower. Unfortunately the tomatos need the space pretty soon, so the peas may have to come out. March was so cold ........

I must harvets corn salad and lettuce and what's left of th eleeks pretty soon..... Also PSB again

      • I cant sow anymore seeds because I've lost my plastic bag full of them which I bought specially for the planting here at the new house. About £40 worth of seeds for all sorts of things. Somebody must have packed it away. I will find in in time for next year hopefully. In the meantime, when I can get out I will buy some more.
My family aren't back till the end of the week and I don't want to leave the cat on his own with builders and plumbers and painters about leaving doors open and hammering and banging.
So I will have to wait till weekend.
I am SO cold today I could just curl up into a ball and hibernate.

        • I have fed and mulched four fruit trees. Only another five to go. Sieved a lot of useable compost, which went onto the fruit tree surrounds. Weeded Tansy's garden and started to mulch that too.
          Sown parsnip and turnip seeds.

          • Sweetcorn sown again. Courgettes sown again. Cukes sown. All covered with a sheet of glass to keep those pesky meeces off!

Dug over the area to be used for parsnips. A little late but they should still be ok!

              • Me and Mr Z did 2 hours de-couchgrassing the plot. Me - the area round the heap which will be used for squashes this year and him, the dodgy path area which was a mat of couch grass.

Both totally shattered now. All daleks were full from Sunday so we had to drag a builders bag out from the back of the shed to put it all in. And it's half full already.

                • Potted on Sarico's Carosellis and some kale seedlings. Do you think 26 Asparagus kale plants will be enough or should I sow some more
Sowed 7 sorts of bunching onions and 6 varieties of leek ranging from Nipper ready in 10 weeks to Bulgarian Giant.
Sowed 7 different squashes and courgettes - now in prop.
Planted out a bucket load of last year's leek seedlings that never grew beyond the teenyweeny size
Picked some of the unintentional "cut and come again" cabbage (last year's ?Hispi that I've left to self seed and grow on in the GH. I've been picking flowering shoots and eating them like Sprouting Broccoli and picking individual leaves for weeks )
Picked my first rhubarb and put the stumps in water to see whether they'll root

Potted on cabbage and cauliflower plants.
Sowed a few rows of various carrots.. Amarillo, Dragon, Flyaway and Autumn King

Mulched some previously planted potatoes with grass clippings and shredded leaves.

                        • Built another baby bed for leafy veg as it's a very shady area. Must get some limestone chippings to lay down and make the whole area look pretty

                          • Mulched a couple of areas of the veggie plot (with my own compost - yay!).
Planted eleven tomatoes and five cucumbers.
Slightly moved one of my paths.

                            And then the heavens opened.

                            Example:

Torrential rain, lightning, thunder and worst of all HAIL. Cauliflowers, lettuce, spinach all shot through with holes, tomato leaves snapped off etc etc.

Hope things recover. But hail, in Spain - it's May tomorrow!

                            • Planted the mini-ocas into a nursery bed;
Did more clearance of brambles, nettles, dock, wood avens, creeping buttercup, hogweed and ivy - (and a stinking thing whose name escapes me at the mo)
Cut down some holly bushes that were so big I had to use my stomach
                              That's got you wondering.....................

                              • Sown sweetcorn, summer and winter squashes, courgettes too. Been to lotty this morning and planted out broad beans. Hoed off and watered everywhere, ran out of time so went back after shopping with mum, to plant lettuce and Brussels sprout seedlings. Raked my bean bed to a fine tilth. Direct sow or not?
