  • Down the allotment:
    - weeded some bindweed and couch grass that had re-grown, left the annual weeds alone to get a bit bigger
    - planted out a packet of Freesia bulbs and 60 Gladioli corms, for cut flowers; broadcast some winter tares around them to keep them company
    - sowed successional peas (Onward) and radishes
    - marked out bed 8 and started digging out the perennial weeds before the rain set in.
At home, pricked out some Nicotiana that have been in the seed tray too long. Maybe they will be ok.

      • Weeded the over-wintering onions at the plot and fertilised them with some chicken poo pellets. Prepared the bed for the cauliflower plants, planted some more carrots and some parsnips, pottered about tidying up the paths and added some bed edging. The hail and torrential rain yesterday seems to have removed most of the blossom from the damson and greengage trees. B****r!!

          • Sowed a few rows of radishes between the rows of perennial greens (which haven't come up yet, so I hope I got the lines straight!). Sowed some marigold seeds around the edges of a few beds. Cleaned out the water butt, which was nearly empty and had a nice collection of leaves and bits n bobs in the bottom. Fastened a piece of netting over the top after reading horror stories of drowned beasties, that will do until Mr H makes me a nice plywood lid for it. Transplanted a white comfrey plant from the back garden to the allotment - soon I will have a whole allotment full of it, no doubt!

                    • Planted out beetroot and lettuce from hot huse with slug pellets scattered round. Putting them under cloche was only nod to hardening off.

                      Harvested fresh lettuce and PSB

                      • This morning in between showers I moved the blow-away out of greenhouse #1. I've clipped it to my compost bin. I'll use it to harden off plants now. Leaving me more space for tomatoes in the greenhouse \o/

                              • Cleared bed 8 on the allotment, ready for the Virginia Gold. Didn't think it was a good idea to plant out in this wind, though.
Got the shears onto the edges of the grass paths, scattered the soft new growth over the beds.
                                Started clearing bed 9.
