  • Evening! Really bad back today - nearly in tears trying to get out of the car at one point so I've limited what I've done. We did go to a smallholding today to look at chickens to buy later in the week once the coop is stocked up.

After painkillers had taken effect I did manage to plant up my herb garden with thyme, rosemary, spearmint, applemint, oregano, tarragon and parsley. Also planted lettuce into stacking strawberry pots - it worked well last year.

Ordered bird netting and nematodes to use later in the week.

    • Feel very happy with myself today, managed to do a fair bit.
Potted on my chillies and peppers. Sowed more lettuce and some sprouting. Put some beans into chit. dug a bed over( pulled up all my flowering leeks- needed the space) added some alpaca crap and emptied my compost bin on top ready for my beans. Put up a wigwam, netting on my frames for my mange tout. Actually that doesn't sound much now!

      • Prepared the space next to the compost bins where the sweet peas are going to go - the idea is to climb them up some old teasel stems I've poked into the pallets.
Potted on the French beans into bigger pots. Pricked out tagetes seedlings into little pots.
Put weed suppressing fabric around the Bramley apple tree - hope to get rid of the grass (and couch grass) and plant mints and flowers around it instead.
Gardening is cheaper than therapy and you get tomatoes

          • Now, what the heck did i do this morning? Ah, I remember!

I fed the chooks and made sure there was enough food (a whole 20kg bag) in there spring feeder in case I didn't get back until late tomorrow. Likewise filled there water containers on a warm sunny day like today.
I moved some calabrese and kale out of the greenhouse to harden off along with beetroot and swede in modules.
Put the brassicas under my brassica net and the rest in a small mesh covered cold frame-ish!
Watered them all, collected some eggs and headed to Druiridge Bay for a 10K run.

            • Planted courgettes out, went to garden centre for some French tarragon and £80 lighter came home with 2 new huge pots, to put the potted christmas trees in, 2ceanothus, a young Witchazel,2 pots of chives, a big rosemary and some French tarragon. Pricked out antirrhinum, verbena, chillies, and rudbeckia. Found a purple sprout on a Psb plant that was mostly eaten by mice in the gh last winter. So ate it. Planed out Fasold beans, yellow wax pod, mange tout. A good day

              • Planted out asparagus peas and cucamelon and then an hour later my cats had destroyed all but one of my cucamelons! My early planted courgettes were far too leggy and not doing well at all being planted out, leaves are all pale, very spindly stems that keep breaking really easily. I've learnt my lesson from germinating seeds early, thankfully have some back ups

                • After the excitement of spotting that the asparagus was popping through at last I planted up 6 hanging baskets and put them in hooks in the PT 1 for a couple of weeks, Weeded the 2 new dahlia beds, planted out 24 sweetcorn in PT 2, tidied up the staging, pulled up the White Lady RB's that got frosted the other night, watered the PTs, weeded the asparagus bed, weeded the paths, prepared the Chicken Condo is readiness of the new arrivals, potted up some herbs and lined along one of the paths, had a bonfire and chitted some more peas and beans.

                  • Yesterday - to the plot. Weeded the strawberries (again!) - have to get some straw to put down around them. Dug over the bed where my 'ornamental' arch is ... not very ornamental as a couple of screws have gone missing and I have effected temporary repairs with baler twine (well I am a farmer's daughter ), ready for the gherkins and outdoor cukes.

                      • Went to garden centre and bought wood paint for the hen house. It's going to be painted in shades of lavender and forget-me-not.

Went to the allotment and weeded. Planted tomatoes in polytunnel and dug bottles down inbetween them to make watering more efficient.

Watered the beans and sweetcorn in there and contemplated planting them out. Planted some strawberry plants under the apple tree after digging out a patch of nettles.

Bottled the nettle tea and use the leftovers to water the potatoes and onions.

Made some bird scares from milk bottle tops and tin pie trays and strung over the peas.

Nice friendly man who was strimming over his plot came and strimmed some of the worst bits of mine.

                        Think that's it.

How did you make the nettle tea, does it keep for long in a bottle?

                          • I chopped up some nettles and put them in a bucket. Filled the bucket with water and covered with cardboard and a brick on top. It has been brewing for 3-4 weeks. There are a few videos on youtube which show you, although it really isn't tricky. It is very stinky though!

                            • Wonder if that nice friendly man would like to come and strim the back of my garden

I know this sounds daft but I can't find any nettles :O

Fed and gave my potatoes a good long soak as they are in buckets and dustbins. Someone (aka not me) will be cutting the grass later so will earth up the potatoes a bit more.

Scrunched up a newspaper and covered the compost bin with it to cover up the bits of fruit someone had not wrapped in paper and then gave it a good soak.

Went through my greenhouse moving the seedlings towards to top of the greenhouse and planted some more beetroot, coriander and sweetcorn as some of mine had not germinated. Also found the slug that had been nibbling on all my electric daises and sliced it in half.

Will go back out after the grass has been cut and sort out a small area for the corn to go in next to the shed to protect it from some of the wind, also as I have run out of places to plant things!!!

Sorted out my celery plants now they have a couple of true leaves on them, wonder why it's taken them so long to get growing!

Went to the back of the garden, where I found a cat nestled among the tall grass I leave growing, and started pulling at the weeds, took a photo and posted them on the forum to find out what they are and how best to get rid of them considering I can't go digging such a large area.

Oh and I also planted a courgette plant in an area which previously had a slab of paving, dug a hole, poured in a fairly large amount of water, topped up with MPC and BFB and then added my plant before popping some cardboard round it to stop any grass growing there again.

A dining table and 2 benches and a shoe rack
And a lil fish pond later

Not too bad for two weekends work later
