  • Made a temporary area for the chooks to have a bit scratch around on the plot. Surrounded it with orange netting but they STILL managed to jump over the top and have a go at my veggies!
Did a mahoosive amount of hand weeding of ground elder and buttercup along with thistles and nettles. Had no gloves so my hands are pretty sore...........as is the back.

Nice hot soak in the bath should cure it I reckon.

Didn't help that I went for a 10K run prior to allotmenteering, got lost and finished up running 15K!

      • Planted out 7 Heinz San Marzano tomatoes on the allotment, with some kohl rabi "Azure Star" and "Luna" from modules to keep them company for a bit.

Re-sowed maincrop carrots to replace the ones that rotted and put 2 more runner bean seeds at the foot of each cane to replace the ones that rotted or got eaten by slugs.

Started clearing another bed (number 11).

        • gave the corn and onions a good water in the polytunel ( an experiment growing them inside).
weeded around onions and put down recent grass cuttings to mulch them.
planted out a few corn seedlings in the outside plot.
sewn more carrot seeds, swiss card, spinach, leaf beet.
planted out cornflower, poppy, nasturchium, marigolds in my bee friendly bed.
applied blood and bonemeal to one raised bed.
put grass cuttings around my cabbages and PSB and cauliflowers.
          weeded my leek bed.
planted out my runner bean on my new arch ( only one came up from seed)
a good watering to my parsnip bed still praying for a show of seedlings.
put parsnip seeds into a plastic lid with wet paper towel, covered with clingfilm to see it i will ever get any parsnips this year! a good tip from this forum i am trying out.
all this with a swollen sprained ankle that is black and blue from falling off the quad!

          • Planted out some miscellaneous brassicas - only time will tell whether they're cabbages, broccoli or sprouts. As for the kale, such subtle differences between some of them and I've only labelled one of each variety I do like surprises
Cut down some hazels to open up the centre of the garden to more light.
My Weed of the Day was Hogweed. Must stop them from flowering at all costs.

              • Planted oca to polytunnel, watered, planted cucumbers to poly and greenhouse. Planted alpine strawberries, belatedly into Tansy's garden. Did a lot of washing of trays, pots and stuff, then tidied them away into the store. Helped Mr VVG move a flippin heavy summerhouse up onto staddle feet/legs. Now time for that bath as I also made lots of lazy garlic, which I got fed up with looking at in the poly.

                • A sad day in many ways - the last of the 2012 purple sprouting harvested and the plants now mouldering on the compost heap, then back home to transform the last of the stored squashes into pumpkin & vanilla jam. Truly the end of an era.

Also took delivery of a free load of horse manure which was far more than I'd bargained for. I'd (naively) assumed the guy would turn up with a small trailer towed behind a landrover or similar; instead he arrived in a tractor with a huge wagon and discharged what must be enough to cover the entire plot three or four inches deep. There's going to be a lot of shovelling come autumn!

                  • Sowed 4 different types of courgette (goodness knows where I'll put them if they all sprout), Crystal lemon cucumber, PSB and VSB (violet, cheers BB). Planted out two more cwt pumpkins to replace some Big Max that wilted away. Put some BNS under the bean wigwam (BTW I think my runner beans are stuck in the starting blocks). Put a Sweet Dumpling squash in a huge tub. Fed and watered everything. I might sneak in a cheeky half day tomorrow from work - well, it is quite a special day for me

                    • Sowed some more carrots and spinach for baby vegetables :-)
Planted out some kale that was hanging around and a courgette who was getting a bit big for his pot.
Donated quite a few plants to some plant-less friends to create a bit more space!
Very excited as everything is finally starting to grow a bit!

                            • Planted about 50 young red cabbage plants in tubs to grow on to semi-adulthood to be fed to the chickens. Saved more for the allotment to grow onto maturity for us and the chickens!

Fenced off a bigger area outside the chickens' pen for them to have a bigger run. They spent all afternoon and evening out in it and seem very happy. Also cleaned out their coop and put bark chips down in their pen.

                              • Went to the local stables and loaded up 7 bags of 3-year old manure, 25p a bag!
Planted up 2 tomato and 2 French Bean outside, also the sweet peas. Sowed beetroot, more radish, more lettuce, more rocket and coriander. 2nd sowing of French Beans are unfurling before my eyes!
