What I did today 2012-2014

Dug over a bed I weeded last night. I left what appeared to be a self seeded foxglove (usually white!) and a self seeded little clump of poached egg plants that are in flower.
Filled my large plastic trug thingy with hoss muck and tipped it in a small pyramid on the bed. Furtled a bit of a hollow in the middle and put a bit of used compost in it. Planted a courgette in the eye of the volcano.
Gave it a good watering to settle everything in place.
Weeded another bed ready to dig over and plant up with sweetcorn tomorow evening.

Built a mushroom bed in the shade of the big oak tree and planted some Winecap mushroom butts.
Shovelled and barrowed a mound of next door's topsoil off my lawn before tonight's forecast rain turned it into a mudheap.
Distributed the soil around the garden, topping up raised beds, the "trampoline" and various garden beds.
Did some more weeding and clearance of brambles.
Hope it rains tonight - the ground is very dry.

I need it to rain too - I have nematodes in the fridge and they will go out of date soon. I have a couple of purple mange tout pods coming through. It's lovely when you see things starting to come to harvest.

Nice to be on the plot after work in the sunshine but boy do i need some rain!!...
Earthed up potatoes, built a couple of wigwams for climbing beans, sorted a few rows of pea poles out,
Then i sowed Peas, French climbing Beans, normal climbing green beans and Radish.
Talked to the two sad looking courgette plants that got dumped in the plot a month ago as 'test subjects' to make them feel better, they are a bit small but the other two died :/
I got to bring home Swiss Chard, Leek, Spring Onions, Radishes and a big bag full of Beetroot Leaves. Happy bunny

Scraped and painted tools
Repotted squashes
Chucked mixed herbs that ran to seed (hope they are F1 or they are going to seed everywhere!)
Filled water containers (as always) for tomorrow

Yesterday. Planted out curly kale and brussels sprouts with my little helper.

Potted up some rooted rosemary cuttings.

Potted on chillis and sweet peppers.

[Two_Sheds]

- unpacked some more sacks of autumn leaves, mixed them with grass clippings, and repacked
- set more mouse traps in the garage. Bought super-duper powerful ones
- planted out more peas
- got some more squash planted out, but they don't look happy. We still have March weather (cold, windy)
- fed & watered the poorly climbing beans: all yellow & flimsy (too cold, for too long)
- got some feeble bedding plants put out. Nothing's growing except the wild grasses


Have nearly given up on this year. We haven't had more than 4 days of sunshine all year, and we are only getting a sprinkle of rain once every 3 or 4 weeks. It's bad

I'm finding my soft fruits, leaf and flowering plants are doing well. It's my roots that have been slow and painful. Along with erratic germination. I've sown three lots of sweetcorn now.

Planted out another 10 miscellaneous courgettes/squashes into the other 2 pallet crate beds. If I don't get a courgette this year I shall be extremely miffed
Undersowed these with beetroot and rocket in one and turnips and mixed salad leaves in the other.
Last night's rain didn't do much, the soil is still very dry. More rain on the way tonight so - bring on the deluge

Dug over another bed and planted sweetcorn in one end and pot grown calabrese in the other end. Rigged up a wire frame to keep the pigeons off.

Sown another pinch of Spring onions and Radish seeds.

Planted out lettuce, scallions, cauliflower and brocolli plants which have been grown in modules.
Put straw under the strawberry plants which are looking good with lots of green fruits on.
Picked my first few peas today, Meteor and Early Onward. Potted on the last of the chilli plants into large pots.

Last night I tested out my new hosepipe on the potatoes that are flowering. Although I have first and second earlies they all seem to be coming into flower at the same time!!
Harvested my first purple radish as well as usual radishes. Purple podded peas are flowering beautifully. Broad bean pods are forming well. Tied back the mange tout at home.

Ate some Kale Raab (kale flowers & stems, sauteed in olive oil, cracked pepper and touch salt)

Planted out the last of the leeks. Have far too many as usual. Planted spare courgette as it was growing nicely, and it seemed a shame not to. Staked and strung the broadies as a bit of insurance against the wind. Dug out plenty more couch grass.
